Kat’s Allergies (F)

Kat’s friends loved to make her sneeze. It had become a game to them, and although exhausting and occasionally embarrassing, Kat loved sneezing too.

Not that it took much effort to get her to sneeze. All it took was a warm summer evening, the scent of pollen in the still, hazy air. Those were the moments which made her collapse into her crazy sneezing fits – the ones that could silence a busy pub garden with their violence and volume, leaving her light-headed and gasping for breath,

Secretly she loved the attention they drew, and made no effort to smother or stifle the involuntary explosions. Sometimes she even relaxed and let them come out louder than she really needed to, especially if she found herself alone. She adored the satisfying buzz in her chest that followed her bouts of allergy-induced sneezing.

Kat ran her hands down her crisp, grey suit, undoing one button to allow a deeper V of her tight-fitting white shirt to become visible. The smooth expanse of the boardroom table stretched away before her, its mirrored surface reflecting her straight, shoulder-length blonde hair, her red lips and trim yet shapely body. She felt ready; powerful.

Through the window that linked the two rooms, she could see her boss shaking hands with a tall woman; austere with dark, curly hair. Predatorily good-looking. Kat ran a nervous tongue across her lips. So this was who she had to impress. She quickly scanned her notes, flicking through the pages without really looking at them.

Another quick glance around the room… and she froze! In the corner, unnoticed until now, was a large bunch of flowers placed in one of the ornamental pots. In the sunlight that lanced through the windows, she could almost see the dancing particles of pollen, sparkling with allergic potency.

No! This was not happening. Her colleagues had sometimes played tricks on her like this before, secretly putting flowers in the office when important clients were due to visit. It had been funny before, but not this one! Not when it was so important that she shine. She crossed the room, edging nearer to the deadly bouquet, moving through the drifting pollen grains. They stirred up, moving through the sunlight. Kat held her breath. Somehow she was going to have to get rid of the flowers or she would explode into one of her vast sneezing fits. Not now, not this meeting! Gingerly, she reached out to seize the stalks but could not resist looking at the flower-heads, loaded with the dreaded grains.

A slow, pulsing itch started deep inside her pert nose. She held the flowers out at arms length as the itch began to advance, growing in strength, delicately spreading through her sinuses. Oh no, this was going to be bad. Kat realised her only hope was to attempt to get rid of her sneezes before the client entered the room.

The first sneeze hit her with its usual body-shaking ferocity. She snapped forwards at the waist, her neatly arranged hair lashing across her shoulders which shuddered with the force of the release. Almost immediately, another back-breaking sneeze came screaming out of her – the two sneezes almost blending together in their desperation to escape her lungs.

The violence of the explosive double made her stumble, and catch her shoe on the projector wire. She threw out her arm to balance herself, trying weakly to sniff the tickle in her nose away. The flowers slipped from her grasp and tumbled to the carpet, releasing a great, hazy cloud of pollen, which seemed to rush straight for Kat’s frantically twitching nose. She felt a great rush beginning in her chest, the start of a tremendous burst a rapid-fire sneezing. There was little she could do to prepare for it, but grab hold of the nearest chair with both hands and allow the hitching to take over, tilting back her head so that he nostrils flared bigger and bigger, until…

…Kat started sneezing! The first was a pure, joyous shriek of a sneeze that tore its way out of her, making her lungs ache with the shear enjoyment of allowing it to come out utterly unrestrained. The first was followed by two more, blending together as a double as her body fought to expel the pollen from her flaring nose. She dreaded to think what she looked like from the adjoining office, the sneezes contorting her body into crazy shapes

As the bout of sneezing reached its peak of intensity, she reared back - mouth open, hair flailing about her head. After a frantic series of hitches she delivered a colossal sneeze that roared through the confined space of the boardroom like a nuclear bomb. It was the kind of sneeze that she loved to release; throwing all her energy into it so that the room echoed and her body tingled. The sort of sneeze that when she finally managed to open her eyes, she was always surprised not to see physical damage to the room.

Instead she opened her eyes to meet the horrified gazes of her manager and the prospective client. Her manager looked enraged, but the client…

…she was getting a distinctly far-away look in her eyes, one finger drifting up beneath her pronounced nose. ‘I’m so sorry,’ sniffled Kat, both mortified and energised by her sneezing fit.

‘Don’t…don’t mention….’ began the client, but it was clear that something was amiss. Her eyelids fluttered, her chest heaved ever so slightly as she began to draw in breath. Transfixed, Kat and her manager watched as the client brought both hands up to her mouth and released a colossal explosion of wind and wetness, in a sneeze that if anything, exceeded Kats own explosive efforts.

When she regained her posture, blinking back allergic tears, she shot Kat a knowing smile. ‘I think we’re going to get along just fine. This proposal you had for me?’ The quaver in her voice betrayed yet more sneezes to come. ‘I think you can leave us now,’ she said, and Kat’s manager backed out of the room, his face a mask of puzzlement.

The End.

OH MY GOSH, that ending. (And that beginning, and that middle...) There's nothing hotter than a character who likes letting out huge, unrestrained sneezes.
