Common Inherited Human Traits

This was something we did in my biology class a few weeks ago when we were studying genetics. We took commonly inherited human traits and checked what phenotype (visible trait) we ourselves had, the phenotype symbol we had whether dominant (capital letter, most common) or recessive (lowercase, less common), and gave our possible genotype (which gene we most likely inherited from either parent). Thought I would ask for your and post mine just for fun! Highlight or bold the text of whichever trait you have for each question. I added pics to clarify certain things if I thought it was necessary. If you don't know much about how this works, I'm sorry, but I think it's fairly straight forward; sorry if it's not!

NOTE: I could be wrong about these traits being recessive or dominant, or anything else. This is merely what I learned in my biology class and decided to post for fun. Please feel free to disagree with me and correct me.

HOW TO FIND YOUR DOMINANT EYE: Make a triangle with the index and thumb of both hands. Find an object with both eyes open. Close one eye, then the other. With which eye can you see more of the object? It's sort of like which thumb you put in front of the other automatically - it just feels more natural to you.

Phenotype: R / r

Genotype: RR / Rr / rr / unsure

Now, I know my twin sister and I are the same on everything except for which thumb we put in front of the other when we interlace our fingers. Does this mean we aren't identical? Hmm, I don't know.. scary!

How interesting!! I didn't know that not everyone had a "hitchhiker's" thumb until just a few years ago when someone saw me moving my thumbs back like in the picture and they got all freaked out. I thought my thumbs were normal because my whole immediate family has them.

Uhhh, I didn't get the letters and that stuff really, because I'm tired, but yeah...

Can't do tongue rolling, got straight hairline, blue eyes (family trademark; it's the like Romanov's blue eyes), straight hair, left thumb over right, straight thumb (hitchhiker's thumb is called "shoemaker's thumb" in my country by the way), unattached earlobes, I had freckles when I was younger but they disappeared when I grew up, got one dimple (my sister does too, but nobody else in the family does) right hand dominant...

And, oh, shit... my left eye is dominant, which is a bitch when you're righthanded and go shooting. Because if you hold the rifle in your right hand (against your right shoulder), your right eye is the one you need to keep open. I didn't know you had a dominant eye before I did that.

My left ear is dominant too, however; I prefer to keep the phone to that ear. Weird.

I was going to put rr because he writes with his left which is what most people think of when they think dominant hand, but he throws and does a number of other things with his right.)

Dominant Eye: I don't have a dominant eye...

I have no idea what to do with the phenotype or genotype. I read about it on wikipedia to try and make sense out of it, but just reverted back to highschool biology. "*cries* I have no idea what all this Bb/B/b/bb means!" It was traumatic!

For simplicity's sake as it relates to this thread, your phenotype is really just whether the trait you have is assigned a capital or lower case letter. So for instance, your phenotype for tongue rolling is R and your phenotype for dimples is d.

Genotype is the combined phenotypes of your parents, so taking tongue rolling as an example if both of your parents can roll their tongues you have a RR genotype for tongue rolling, if one of your parents can roll their tongue and the other can't then you have a Rr genotype, and if neither of them can roll their tongue then you have a rr genotype.

That's all you really need to know to be able to select an option in this thread, what those options mean have to do with whether a trait is dominant or recessive which... someone else can probably explain a lot better than me
