The Way of the Vampires

Invisibles

I wrote this a while ago when I was going through my Vampire Phase. Since it doesn't really describe Vlad and Zana in here, I suppose I should start with it.

Zana is a young girl, about 14 years old. She has thick, curly red hair, and pale green eyes. She wears a red t-shirt and black pants with black boots that come up to her knees.

Vladimir is a 927 year old Vampire with long-ish shaggy black hair, crimson eyes, and a scar going down the right side of his face. He dresses in all black, usually wearing a cape.

Zana's parents were killed, and the murderer came after her, but she ran until she came to an abandoned castle, which happened to be where Vladimir was staying. Vlad sensed something in her that he had not seen in a mortal before, and wanted to keep her with him. He killed that murderer, and offered Zana a new life with him. As a vampire's assistant. Of course, now that she knew he was a vampire, if she turned town the offer, he would have to kill her to keep her from telling everyone about him. after all, 'they' were watching. She reluctantly agreed, but never forgave Vlad for 'ruining' her life.

Anyway, here's the story~

------------------

"Remind me again why we're walking down here?" Zana asked as she and her master, Vladimir, trudged down through the dark, cold, damp old tunnels beneath Romania. He had told her before that they stretched all the way across the country, but never did she believe him until now.

The vampire continued walking forward, not stopping to look back at his young apprentice. "Because, Young Zana, they are watching."

Who the hell 'they' were she'd never figure out.

He'd been speaking of 'them' since she ran into his castle to hide from that killer... If she had only known that she'd been headed toward a fate worse than death, she'd have let the guy kill her. But now, here she was. stuck with the vampire that had saved her life from a bloodthirsty murderer, then threatened it with his own brand of blood-thirst. Oh, how she despised him.

"Will you at least tell me where we're going?" She pried. They had been walking in the tunnels for over an hour, and her feet were starting to become sore from walking so long without a break.

"We are headed to a location..." His voice trailed off for a moment. "where..." His nose twitched ,and his upper lip curled ever so slightly as his breath hitched.

Zana turned her head in curiosity. Having only a backside view of him, it had appeared simply as if he abruptly stopped and gasped quickly. What was going on? Had 'They' found them? Why did he-

"Heh....HEKTCHU!"

Zana's thought process was stopped immediately. Had that REALLY just happened, or was it her mind playing a trick on her? Playing out her weak point, testing her limits? Truth be told, it was one of her greatest desires to see him sneeze. Though she hated him for ruining her life, there was just something about his slender aquiline nose... She had always thought that it would make his sneezes sound beautiful... The perfect, breathy buildups, creating suspense to the very moment he would release, full and never stifled or strained... She had imagined it in the vilest depths of her mind and kept it locked away from the world with the rest of her secrets.

Besides, she didn't even believe vampires could sneeze in the first place! So what the hell had just happened?

Hunched over, the old young-looking vampire's expression was a mix between shock, and confusion. However, he quickly recomposed himself, sniffled and continued with his sentence as if nothing had happened.

"Where They will not be able to find us. Come, we must make it there before sunrise." He continued walking as Zana fell in beside him, her eyes not leaving his face.

She was paying more attention now. She noticed his nose slightly twitching irritatedly, wrinkling right below the bridge as the tip of his nose turned up a little and his nostrils flared at the intake of air.

"Huhh..."

She heard him breathe out, and he closed his eyes as he did the same again.

"Huhh..."

She saw the faint lines at the corners of his eyes as they squeezed shut tightly, and she saw his upper lip curve upward slightly as his jaw dropped open. He paused a moment, and Zana could tell he was expecting it this time, by the way his face tensed as did his expression, just before letting out a fierce, "H-Hut-CHU!!" Jerking forward with thrust, covering his nose and mouth at once.

She stared at him incredulously. It HADN'T been her imagination.

Vladimir opened his eyes and looked at her out of the corner of his eye. She could feel her cheeks burning, a blush blooming, which she tried to hide behind the curtain of her thick, curly red hair.

Her master raised a thick eyebrow in question, wondering about the girl's strange behavior, then he began to wonder about his OWN strange behavior. It was so illogical for a vampire to sneeze. And the effects it had on the girl?

After a while, Zana finally got up the nerve to speak.

"...Does that happen often?" Oh how she hoped it did.

He stared into her eyes, his bright crimson ones burning holes through her's, pale, icy, and green. He searched her eyes, possibly looking for an answer to her question.

Heaven knows HE didn't have one.

Eventually, he shook his head slowly and sniffed. "No, I cannot say that is does-" He was interrupted by a harsh, "HAT-SCHU!!"

Zana bit down on her lip. His sneezes sounded just as she had imagined them; Breathy, yet powerful and surprisingly wet.

"...I didn't even know vampires COULD sneeze." She mused.

"Nor did I." He replied, sniffling slightly.

That had surprised her.

"You mean you've NEVER sneezed after becoming a vampire?!"

He nodded. "Exa... Ah... heeh.... - I apologi- Hu-HUTCHU!! HECKSCHTU!! AtCHOO!"

Overwhelmed by the force of the sneezes, both of them sat in stunned silence, Vladimir with the occasional sniffle.

Zana watched, secretively peering through her hair, watching him. The way his nostrils, reddened from the irritation, occasionally flared, and heard his breath catch every now and then as if he might sneeze, but nothing would come of it, leaving the vampire with a most annoying itch, must to his dismay. He took a deep breath in, and when it did not trigger his sneezing, he spoke. His voice seemed a bit hoarse.

'Probably from sneezing so hard like that...' Zana thought.

"In the 900 years I have been a vampire... I have not once...." His breath caught, unknowingly causing Zana's heart to pound faster in anticipation. "Sneezed." He said slowly, composure once against regained.

The presence of the sneeze was still hovering and it was so powerful in waiting and suspense, that even Zana could feel it. She turned her eyes away from him, hoping they would not give here secret pleasure away.

He was hunched over, much like after the first sneeze.. it tortured him, played with his nose gently tickling, starting as a playful itch outside, then slowly moving inward.

He recalled the same thing happening before he'd been turned. It was one of those things he hated about being human. Being weak. And now that he was a vampire, it was supposed to stop.

Go away.

Be done.

But no.

He always HAD been different from the lot.

Lost in thought, he had hardly noticed the tickle once more building. Burrowing. Burning. He gasped, taking shallow breaths... It went on for a moment or so more, until finally, to both of their relief, he let it out with a few great, desperate, loud sneezes.

Zana shivered as the release sent chills down her spine.

Vladimir shook it off and stopped under a manhole.

"We are here." He said, climbing the ladder and sliding the cover off, then pulling himself out. Zana quickly followed behind as they came to an abandoned house.
