Should we…?” “Oh, I’m not scared,” says Gemma. “We’ll stay out.” … “Okay,” Mark says after a helpless sneeze. The sunset paints him orange. “This is dice.” “Gesundheit,” Gemma laughs. She holds his tea. Mark shivers, ducks his nose into his sleeve. His breathing rhythm changes. “HUH–! Ugh, whew.” “Mark, this is a bad cold,” she says. “You’re ill. I’m flattered. Let’s go out another time.” “HHH-hah–… Ah! hooh… hh-khHHH—… HEUH! – hhahhh— khhaAA-DZHZSHSH!” Mark holds some wadded Kleenex to his face. “I’b sorry. Oh by God. Why cad’t I stop?” “It’s not your fault,” says Gemma. “HUH!— GKTCH-HEEE!” “Wow. Bless you, Scout. I’m calling it. Come here.” With a warm arm she guides him to his car. … He misses half the work week, but they text. Her office hours are Thursdays at 1. He leans up in her door frame. His nose glows. “Hey, you,” says Gemma, beaming. “How’s the cold?” “I’m feeling a lot better.” Mark sounds rough. He clears his throat. “You didn’t catch it, huh?” “Nope. I’m a hardy type.” Mark blows his nose. “I’m pretty much a butterfly,” he sighs. “How was the morning? Russian 403?” “They said the smartest things. I’m so damn proud.” He smiles and nods. “I like that about you.” He rubs his chest and turns away to cough. “Good lord. I should head home. You keep it up.” “Get well, okay?
