Chapter 6

Everyone was silent. All eyes on Jane, watching for her next move. She opened her mouth as if to speak but -

“HATSHOOOOO!”

Another booming sneeze came out of her nose and the force doubled her over. Again nobody said a word. Danielle stood behind everyone, biting her knuckle so nobody could see her smiling.

“I feel fuddy.” Jane said as she put her hand to her head.

“Well, I think the flu can feel funny sometimes.” Beth said.

“There really is a first time for everything.” Said Shannon.

“Here, come with me, Jane.” Danielle moved through the other girls. She grabbed Jane’s hand a little tighter than normal and escorted her to her bedroom. Jane got under the covers and pulled them up to her chin, her teeth chattering. Danielle was carrying her flashlight on her person by now.

“Here, Jane, can you open wide and say ‘Ahhhhhh’?”

Jane did as instructed while Danielle shined a light down her throat.

“Already red. I knew this flu was strong, but strong enough to knock down Jane Stanley? I’d never thought I’d see the day.” Danielle said, still trying to hide her excitement.

“HaSHOOO! I kdow. So far I’b dot very ibpressed by it. But you seeb to edjoy takidg care of everyode.” Jane said before coughing into her elbow.

“Well, I just like making people feel better. It’s why I do what I do. Now, it’s going to be soup and tea for dinner and you’re not to leave this bed. Got it?” Jane gave Danielle a playful salute. Danielle gave Jane’s ankle a quick rub and pulled the blanket down so she was entirely covered.

Once she was alone, Jane took her new condition in. She tried to take a breath through her nose but was unable to do so. Her nostrils felt like clogged pipes, and everything was filling up in her skull. Her head had never hurt this much. She was forced to breathe through her mouth, which was easy enough, but it also made her feel her chest filling up with mucus. She let out an involuntary cough as a result. Jane swallowed hard, leaving a sharp pain in her throat. She really felt awful. And yet, she understood where Danielle was coming from. She had nothing to do now except lay back and relax. She felt her bare feet feel the warm blanket and the cool sheets as she stretched out and took her newfound illness in.

Back in the kitchen, the remaining healthy girls talked among themselves.

“Okay. Who should be next?” Beth asked. She was starting to have some fun with this whole idea.

“Well, let’s go back to the number system. I’ll be number one again. Cassie, you’ll be 2. Kayla, 3. Beth 4. Megan 5.” Shannon said as she opened her sorting app on her phone.

“Let’s see. Number 3. You’re next Kayla.” Shannon announced to the group. All eyes turned to Kayla who had a perplexed look on her face.

“What’s the matter?” Cassie asked.

“I don’t think this is such a good idea. I don’t think I want to go through with it.” Kayla said nervously.

“Don’t be like that. We all agreed. Look at all the work Megan had to do to make this possible. Look at how willing Candice was to try it. Look at how fast Rose caught it. Look how hard Jane tried, and she had never been sick before.” Shannon said, very upset.

“Well, not everyone needs to get sick for this to be successful.” Kayla said defensively.

“Oh come on. We’re still all going to get it. What are you going to do. Be the only healthy one?” Cassie said.

“Sure. If I can help it.” Kayla retorted. Before anyone could say anything else, Danielle appeared.

“Hey guys. Is dinner almost ready? I’m starving.”

The healthy girls are in almost silence. Danielle could kind of sense that everyone was in a mood and chalked it up to how fast girls were getting sick. Little did she know that the real reason for tension was that Kayla was refusing to get sick.

Everybody ate and drank in relative silence. Shannon asked Danielle what she wanted to do after dinner.

“It’s been a long day for everyone. How about a pajama and movie night?” That sounded good to everyone.

A couple of hours later, Candice, Rose, and Jane were all snoring away in bed. Each of them in a deep sleep, trying to alleviate their flu symptoms.

The remaining healthy girls all sprawled out on the couches and chairs in the living room, watching a movie. It was an old Rom-com called “Two Weeks Notice” with Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. Danielle picked it out, partially due to the fact that Sandra Bullock’s character catches a gnarly cold toward the end.

Danielle sat on the large couch with her feet up on the coffee table. She was under a blanket, watching intently. Next to her sat Shannon, with Cassie on the end. On the love seat next to them, Beth sat cross legged while Megan sat next to her with her right foot tucked under her left leg. Then, all the way at the end, in a recliner, sat Kayla, sitting as far as possible from everyone. Danielle didn’t notice but everyone else kept showering her with dirty looks.

Again, nobody said a word. It seemed like the group was in a silent, angry trance that would remain unbroken until-

“HaiCHOOOO!”

That snapped everyone out of it instantly. Heads turned and looked around.

“Guys. I thidk I’b sick. HaiSHOO!” Said Megan.

“Oh no. Come on, no more movie for you.” Danielle said. As Megan stood up, Kayla snuck off and went to bed. Megan slid her bare feet into her fuzzy slippers and headed off to her room. She was bunking with Candice and quietly tiptoed in trying not to wake her.

“HiCHOOO! Dabbit!” She whispered after letting out a sneeze. Candice woke up, coughed, and lifted her head.

“Begad? Is everythidg okay?”

“Sorry Caddice. I’b sick dow. I’b cobidg to bed.”

“Oh do. I’b sorry. Get udder the covers.” Candice lifted the covers and Megan crawled right in. Soon, they were both snoring away.

Love how fast and contagious it is and how Megan didn't have to do anything to catch it. Can't wait to see who will be next and what happens with Kayla. Will one of the girls purposely infect her or is it going to happen anyway 🤔

Chapter 7

Danielle was the first one awake the next morning. She quietly got out of bed, showered, and dressed herself in black leggings, white long-sleeved shirt, black vest, and white ankle socks.

She slowly made her way downstairs and brewed some coffee. She sipped and sat and pondered her good fortune. There were four people in these walls that she cared about deeply, all infected with a nasty flu. She thought about Candice, who seemingly brought this illness into the cabin with her. She was such a sweet person and Danielle already thought of her as a sister. She was definitely the baby of her fiancé’s family and she seemed to almost thrive letting others take care of her. Not that that bothered Danielle, she loved every second of it.

Then there was her cousin. Rose was very preppy and always looked her best. Her hair was never out of place, her makeup was always perfect, her clothes and shoes were always stylish. It made Danielle giggle seeing her with bedhead, her nose bright red, her designer jeans replaced by her comfy pajamas.

The big surprise of course was Jane. Outside of her case of chicken pox years ago, Jane had never been sick. She never missed any school or work. She exercised very regularly and the sheer shock of seeing her curled up in bed, sneezing and coughing the day away gave Danielle butterflies.

Lastly, her co-worker and good friend, Megan was the latest victim. Danielle valued her nursing skills immensely and often felt she couldn’t compare to her. She was excited for Megan to be the one in bed and give her the same care she gave her patients.

Danielle was snapped out of her daydream by Shannon, who had just come downstairs also dressed for the day. The two began preparing breakfast for everyone while the remaining healthy girls trickled in. Danielle loaded up trays with tea, juice, fruit, medicine, among other sick day essentials and began distributing. She first visited Jane. Danielle nudged open the door and found the room still completely dark.

“Good morning, Janey! Rise and shine! How are you feeling?” Danielle said in a singsong voice as she opened the curtains and flooded the room with sunlight. Jane woke up with a grumpy look on her face while she slowly sat up. She was wearing red flannel pajamas with white polka dots. Once she sat up, she rested her hands on her knees, tried to answer, but all that came out was:

“HetSHOOO! Oh by God I’b already over beidg sick.” She groaned.

“You poor thing. Here let’s take some medicine and try to eat a little bit.” Jane took the cup of DayQuill in front of her and almost gagged.

“What the hell is this stuff?” She whined after she swallowed it.

“It’s not for the taste, but if you want to get better fast, you’ll take it.” Danielle said as she put Jane’s hair in a top knot.

“I’ll check in on you shortly. Just try and rest and let the medicine do it’s job.”

Jane lay back down after Danielle left and rubbed her temples.

“HaiCHOO!” She was sure the sensation she felt yesterday that made the flu enjoyable was just a fever.

Next up on Danielle’s breakfast tour was Candice and Megan’s room. She opened the door to find the pair already awake, sitting up in bed. Candice was facing Megan, who was inserting pieces of tissue into each of Candice’s nostrils.

“Okay. That should hold.” Megan said as Candice turned back over to get under the covers. As she did, she had a very familiar look on her face.

“Eh, Ehhhh, EhCHOOOOO!” Candice sneezed incredibly loud. It was so forceful that the tissues flew right out of her nose.

“Ugh. I’b sorry Begad.”

“Maybe you should let the healthy nurse take care of you, and let the sick nurse rest.” Danielle said with a smile.

“Bordidg Dadielle. Sorry we didd’t see you there.” Megan said.

“No problem. But you should be resting. Your duty to care for sick people ended when you became sick yourself.” Danielle playfully squeezed Megan’s big toe at the end of the bed after she set the breakfast trays down. Megan smiled as she took her DayQuill enthusiastically.

“How are both of you feeling today?”

“I’b a little better thad yesterday, but still a lodg way to go. *sniff*” Candice said. “By dose will dot stop ruddidg.”

“I feel like cobplete crap. Feverish add achy all over. ItCHOOO!” Megan chimed in.

“Well we can fix both of those things.” Danielle sat on the bed and gave two aspirin to Megan with a bottle of water.

“Keep drinking the water. I don’t want you to get dehydrated.” Danielle then crumpled up more tissues, leaving the pieces slightly bigger, and inserted them into Candice’s nose.

“These ones should stay in better. I’ll be back in a bit.”

“Thadk you Dadielle!” They said in unison. Danielle’s last stop was Rose. She found Rose not only awake but out of bed, with her robe over her pajamas and open toed slippers on her feet.

“Rose, what are you doing out of bed?”

“Oh I’b cobidg dowdstairs. I’b feelidg buch, ahh, buch , ahhhh, ACHHOOOOOO! Buch better.”

“You’ll do no such thing. You’re very sick right now. Come lay back down.” Rose contemplated, and decided that the bed looked much more appealing. She lay back down and let Danielle cover her with the blankets, which she then pulled up to her chin.

“Take some medicine and try and get more sleep. You’ll feel better soon. I’ll be back in about an hour to check on you.”

“Okay. Thadks.” Rose said weakly as she closed her eyes. Danielle closed the curtains and shut the door. Her rounds were complete. She felt bad for her friends but was delighted to see this flu on full display. She headed downstairs to find Shannon and Beth eating sausage and eggs at the kitchen table while Kayla sat in the living room on her phone drinking coffee. She appeared to be brooding but Danielle was too preoccupied to notice.

“Hey guys l. Thanks for bearing with me.” She said as she entered the kitchen.

“No problem. I’m sorry everyone keeps getting sick. It’s so nice of you to take care of everyone.” Beth said.

“Well, everyone seems to be resting now, how about we head into town for a little bit? I noticed some cute shops on the way in.” Shannon suggested.

Danielle looked back toward the bedrooms. She didn’t want to leave her patients, but she definitely could use a break.

“Sure. Let’s grab Kayla and head out.” She said.

“Is this everybody?” Beth asked.

“I think everyone else is-“ Shannon started.

“HepSHOOOOOO!” All heads whipped around and looked. Cassie was in the living room. Her hair in a ponytail, she wore a black tank top, gray sweatpants, and moccasins. She was holding a tissue to her face.

Chapter 8

“Everyone else is sick.” Shannon finished her sentence as Cassie trudged into the kitchen. Kayla snuck off to the bathroom probably to disinfect herself.

“Good bordidg. Sorry I got up kidda late. ITCHOOO!” Cassie sneezed into her elbow.

“I think I know why that is.” Danielle said as she found someone’s cardigan on the back of a chair. She took it and draped it over her friend from high school.

“*sniff* I thidk you’re right. Who ab i kiddidg? I’b sick.”

“As a dog. Come with me. Nurse’s orders.”

Danielle escorted her friend out of the room and back to bed. Jane was sound asleep, so the two had to quietly tiptoe into the room. Cassie sat down on the bed and kicked off her moccasins. Danielle helped her lay back down and tucked her in. Danielle was about to whisper to Cassie when she noticed her eyes squint and her breath hitch.

“Heh. Hehhhh.” Danielle didn’t want to wake Jane up. She dove and grabbed a tissue and placed it to Cassie’s nose.

“HehShhhhh!” Just in the Nick of time. Jane rolled over onto her side, still asleep.

“Can I get you anything?” Danielle whispered as Cassie took some aspirin with water. She shook her head.

“I just wadt to sleep right dow.”

“Okay. We’re going to town but we’ll be back soon.” Danielle whispered. Cassie nodded as she closes her eyes.

In the kitchen, Shannon and Beth were talking.

“I think you should be the next person to get sick.” Shannon said, her voice low.

“You think?” Asked Beth.

“Yes. Kayla is your roommate. If you get sick, she’s doomed. Every other bed has a sick person except for Danielle. She can’t avoid it anymore.”

“Good point. Here I have an idea.” Beth walked to the counter and grabbed a half-drunk glass of juice that had belonged to Candice. Looking at Shannon, she downed the rest of the glass.

“Perfect.” Shannon smiled. Just then, Danielle reappeared with Kayla.

“Alright. Let’s head out while everyone is asleep.”

They piled into Beth’s rented Jeep and made the brief drive into town.

The center of town was very touristy and was just getting ready for skiing season. The first stop for the girls was a clothing boutique. They didn’t find anything they were super crazy about except for Danielle. She picked out a pair of white pajamas that matched her wedding dress. After the boutique, they went across the street to an antique shop. Again, nobody found anything useful except for Danielle, who found an old small tub that she purchased.

“What are you going to do with that?” Kayla mumbled.

“I’m not sure yet, but I’ll find some use for it. Danielle cheerily replied.

They ended up a small cafe down the street. Cassie grabbed a table by the front window and the four enjoyed a nice latte. They chatted for a little while and enjoyed the sunny morning. Everyone was having a good time. That is until-

“HerCHOOO!” Kayla almost jumped out of her seat. All eyes looked around. Beth had her hand to her nose. Shannon grinned slightly, Danielle put her hand on Beth’s shoulder.

“Beth, was that what I think it was?”

“HarCHOO! Yep. I’b feelidg a little stuffy all of a sudded.”

Just like that, they all piled into the Jeep. Danielle drove, and Shannon climbed into the passenger seat, leaving Kayla to sit next to a sniffling Beth. She kept her hand over her mouth as she stared in disgust while Beth blew her nose into a napkin. The drive was short but to Kayla, it felt like it would never end.

Once they pulled up to the cabin, Beth got inside and took off her jacket and boots before heading off to bed. That left at least one sick girl in every bed with the exception of Danielle’s.

Beth lay under the covers, still in her sweater, jeans, and fuzzy socks. Danielle came in and gave her a fresh box of tissues and a mug of tea.

Danielle now swore not to leave the house again while there were so many sick girls. She waited on everyone hand and foot the entire afternoon.

It was starting to become a little overwhelming, as there were now six sick patients in the house, but Danielle was in complete heaven. Around 3:00, she was delivering another cup of tea to Beth. Beth was now changed into a set of purple paisley silk pajamas and was much comfier. She sipped her tea as Danielle sat on the bed and checked on her, with her bare feet in Danielle’s lap.

“I bust adbit, you sure kdow how to bake beidg sick a relaxidg experiedce.” Beth said with a cough.

“Well, I am a nurse. I’ve had lots of practice in this area.” Danielle said as she stroked Beth’s soles lightly.

“Dot all druses are this attedtive to their patiedts.” Beth said, closing her eyes.

“I guess I just enjoy making you feel better, even if I need to put up with your smelly feet.” She joked as she kept stroking. Beth giggled as she lay back, almost asleep. She would’ve fallen into a deeper sleep but was startled by a loud “ESHOOOO!”

It startled Danielle too. It was hard to tell at this point where sneezes were coming from in the house. She gently put Beth’s feet back on the bed and stood up.

She wandered out and found Shannon in the kitchen, who had the same puzzled look on her face.

“That didn’t sound like any of the girls. Do you know who that could be?” She asked.

“No idea. Maybe Cassie?” Danielle guessed.

“ESHOOOOO!” They heard it again. It was coming from the small bathroom off of the kitchen. The sisters wandered over and knocked on the door.

“Hey, you shouldn’t really be out of bed without help. Let’s get you back to your room. May we come in?” Danielle said gently. Slowly the door opened. Standing in the doorway, with a tissue to her face, was Kayla.

Chapter 9

Shannon had to bite her tongue. This was absolute poetic justice. Thank God her efforts had paid off. There Kayla stood, in her old sorority sweatshirt, black leggings, and bare feet, blowing her nose into a wad of toilet paper. There was no way she could deny she was sick.

“Oh Kayla, you poor little thing.” Danielle said.

“What do you bead?” She asked.

“Well, I think the flu caught up with you. It’s certainly spreading fast.” Danielle said cheerfully.

“*sniff I have do idea what you’re talkidg about.” Kayla said before descending into a fit of hacking coughs. Maybe she could deny it.

“Kayla, come on. You were t sneezing and coughing like this an hour ago. Come to bed and get some rest.” Danielle pleaded.

“I feel fide. I’b defidetly dot sick. I’ve beed stayidg far away frob everyode. HuiSHHOOOO!”

“Kayla, this house is a germ pit right now. You weren’t going to keep this up the whole time. You know what? There’s one way to settle this.” Danielle went and grabbed her nursing bag. She opened it, reached in, and grabbed her thermometer.

“If you don’t have a fever, I’ll leave it alone. If you do, it’s time to put on your pajamas and get in bed.”

“Deal.” Kayla said. She opened her mouth as Danielle placed the thermometer under her tongue. As they waited for it to beep, Danielle noticed Kayla’s nose begin to twitch. She grabbed a tissue, prepared for the worst. Simultaneously, the thermometer beeped and Kayla let out a harsh “EISHOOO!” Which caused the thermometer to fall to the floor. Shannon picked it up.

“100.3. That’s a fever if I’ve ever seen one.” She announced. Danielle looked for herself. She looked at Kayla and smiled.

“Now off to bed with you. I’ll be in in a second to check on you.” Kayla had never felt so defeated. She knew everyone was upset with her for trying to back out of the plan. Once she saw how bad this flu actually was, she got scared and wanted no part of it. Now here she was, feeling like she had let everyone down, and not to mention, sick as one could be. She opened the door to her room and found Beth sitting up in bed. She looked up at Kayla, and immediately understood. She was grinning from ear to ear.

“Stop please. I’b id do bood. I just wadt to sleep.” She whined as she crawled into bed. Beth rolled over and began to cuddle her roommate.

“Of course. Welcobe to the club.”

Shannon and Danielle went into overdrive that evening trying to take care of everybody. Shannon insisted on delivering everybody’s dinner to them. She was thank by each sick woman by getting her face sneezed on. Their job was almost complete.

Later on, after everyone else had gone to sleep, Danielle and Shannon sat in the living room in their pajamas, watching movies. It has been silent for a bit before Danielle spoke.

“I’m sorry this hasn’t been a typical bachelorette party.” She told her maid of honor.

“Oh that’s okay Danielle, it’s not your fault. I just feel bad for you. It’s your party after all.”

“Uh huh.” Danielle said as she blushed and looked away.

“But something tells me this is actually what you wanted.” Shannon said.

“It’s that obvious huh?” Danielle said, still not facing her sister.

“You’ve never actually been discreet about your interest in sick people.” Shannon said with a giggle. Danielle didn’t say anything, but kept on blushing.

“Oh, it’s not a big deal, sis. It’s one of my favorite things about you. I just wish I knew more about it is all.” Shannon said, nudging Danielle’s leg with her foot.

“Okay, okay. It’s a little complicated. I’ve always thought being sick was the best thing that could ever happen. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why people hate feeling snotty, achy, and tired, but to me it’s a small price to pay. A perfect day is a rainy or snowy one and you have nothing to do but stay cozy by any means necessary. You have to lay in bed under all your warm blankets, wear your comfiest pajamas and maybe even a fluffy robe. And someone waits on you hand and foot. They bring you everything you want. All sorts of medicine to make you feel better, and hot soup to warm you up, and liquids to keep you hydrated, and tissues to sneeze into and blow your nose into. And blankets to warm you up, or if that doesn’t work, hot water to soak your feet in. I think what a cold does to someone’s voice is the cutest sounding thing ever. I like watching the amount of used tissues grow and grow on someone’s bed. I like seeing people go from feeling their best, to worst, and back to their best. I just have never been able to get enough of it and this trip has been everything I’ve ever wanted.” Danielle finished her passionate speech. She looked at Shannon who was smiling.

“But that was by design wasn’t it?” Danielle said, now realizing that everyone had been trying to get sick the entire time. Shannon nodded.

“That’s just - wow. I don’t know what to say. You guys must all think I’m weird.”

“Oh don’t worry. We all think it’s very endearing.” Shannon said reassuringly. “We wouldn’t have done it if we thought it was weird.”

“Well I can’t thank you enough. This has been the best couple of days ever. I don’t think it could get any better.” Danielle said happily.

“No- ehhh, do deed- Ehhhhh HEHSHOOOOO! Do deed to thadk be. *sniff*” Shannon jerked her head forward with that sneeze. Slowly she looked up at her sister.

“I stand corrected. This trip just got better.” She said with a laugh.

Chapter 10

Danielle found herself once again up very early the next morning. It was like waking up on Christmas morning. There was so much excitement (and so many germs) in the air that she immediately got out of bed, showered, and got dressed.

She sat in the kitchen, watching the sunrise over the mountains in the distance. What good fortune that she had eight sick women all asleep in this cabin who needed her care.

Danielle felt very grateful that they had all gone out of their way to ensure that Danielle got her wish. She realized though that eight was a lot of sick people to take care of at once. She thought of running back and forth between all of their bedrooms and realized she would be run pretty ragged quickly. Trying to think of an easy solution, her eyes turned toward the television, which she had turned on low for some background noise. The movie on AMC that morning was “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” She saw the grandparents all sharing one bed and suddenly had an idea.

Twenty minutes later, Danielle had roused all eight patients and now had eight sick, tired and cranky women standing in front of her in the living room. They all stood in a row, Shannon in her green plaid pajamas and flip flops. Next was Rose in her pink robe, blue striped pajamas, and open toed slippers. She had a tissue box in her hand. Then there was Jane, a blanket draped over her shoulders in her red polka-dotted pajamas and slippers. She was currently coughing into her blanket. Next stood Cassie in her black sweater, gray sweats, and moccasins. Then there was Kayla, in her blue robe, pink-checkered pajamas, and slippers. She was blowing her nose into a tissue. Then there stood Beth, holding a quilt to her, in her purple paisley pajamas and Ugg boots. Next to her was Megan in her black zip up sweatshirt, orange pajama shorts and fuzzy slippers. Lastly, on the end was Candice, in her yellow robe, gray tank top and yellow pajama pants.

“I’m sorry that you’re all so very sick. I’m even more sorry I made you all get out of bed, but I have an idea that’s going to make taking care of all of you so much easier. Follow me.” Danielle marched up the stairs, with the sniffling caravan behind her. She led them up to her bedroom where her freshly made Alaskan King sized bed sat. She pulled back the covers.

“Shannon, get in and scoot all the way down.” Her sister did as instructed.

“Okay, now Rose, you get in facing the opposite way.” Rose got in with her head toward the foot of the bed. She scooted down until she was right up against Shannon’s feet. This continued until all eight girls were sharing the huge bed, four on each side.

“Great now, that I have you all in one place, it’ll be much easier to take care of you all.” Danielle said and went to work. Shannon couldn’t believe how crafty her older sister was.

Danielle was so overcome with emotion seeing this many sick people in one place. She had to be on top of her game to enjoy all of their sneezing and coughing. She went right into nurse mode.

“Hai SHOOOOO! Dadielle, by head hurts.”

“I’b so hot!”

“Heeeh HEHCHOOOOO! Ugh I deed bore tissues.”

“Do we have ady cough bedicide?”

“By throat is killidg be.”

“By chest is so codgested, it’s hard to breathe!”

“I’b so thirsty right dow.”

“Dadielle, by stobach is queasy.”

Danielle was in and out of the room constantly. An ice pack for Shannon’s headache. A thermometer for Rose. A fresh box of tissues for Jane. Cough syrup for Cassie. Tea for Kayla. Cough drops for Beth. A popsicle for Megan’s throat. A bowl of soup for Candice. Danielle was so happy. The other eight were so happy spending time together even in their condition.

“Shaddod, I’d just like to say thadk you for this trip. I’b havidg so buch bore fud lyidg I’d bed sick as a dog thad if we had gode skiidg.” Candice said.

“Agreed. This edded up beidg ad awesobe party. *sniff*” Cassie chimes in.

“Eh ESHOOOO! I gotta adbit, this was the best way to spedd by first tibe with the flu. It bakes be wadt it every year.” Jane said with a laugh.

“I wouldd’t go that far.” Said Rose. “But this tibe, it was a lot of fud.”

“Well you guys are totally welcobe. But Megad also deeds to be thadked for gettidg us a sabple of the virus.” Shannon said before blowing her nose.

“I was happy to do it for Dadielle. Dow let’s rebebber the other goal of this trip.” Megan said.

“You’re right.” Agreed Beth. “Hey Dadielle, we deed you.”

Danielle spent the rest of the day waiting on the girls. Orange juice for Cassie, water for Jane, Tylenol for Megan, ice cream for Rose, grapefruit for Kayla, ginger ale for Shannon, Vaporub for Candice, and nasal spray for Beth.

Tissue boxes, blankets, hot water bottles, DayQuil, all made their rounds around the large bed. At one point Kayla complained of being cold. Danielle helped her out of bed and led her downstairs to soak her feet in the tub she had purchased in town. She had filled it with hot water for her.

By 9:00 that night, all eight were snoring away in their shared bed. Danielle watched and giggled to herself as Cassie and Beth both had one of their feet resting on Kayla, who was fast asleep and none the wiser. She shut off the lights and went downstairs, relieved that her plan had worked. She sat on the couch and relaxed for a bit, reading a book. After about twenty minutes, she realized that she was completely exhausted. She quietly went to Cassie and Jane’s room and went to bed. She knew tomorrow would be another long day, as most if not all of them would still be sick. And who else would take care of them?

Chapter 11

The third morning began early. Candice opened her eyes a little after 6. She sat up in bed, rubbed her eyes and noticed her head was still pounding. Though not as bad as the first morning, she knew she was still sick. On the end of the big bed, she was able to grab the thermometer that Danielle had left on the nightstand. She quietly took her temperature and was relieved to find that her fever had indeed broken.

“Hai ISHOOO!” Her nose reminded her she still had a long way to go as she sneezed all over Megan, who was sleeping across from her. She slowly got out of bed, tied her robe, and donned a pair of slides. She headed downstairs and grabbed a fresh box of tissues. She blew her nose and began brewing herself a cup of coffee in the kitchen. Candice was over drinking tea.

She sipped her coffee and realized that she still needed rest. She headed to the living room and laid down on the couch, under a throw blanket. About half an hour, Rose came downstairs, also in her robe and pajamas.

“Good bordidg, Rose. How are you feelidg?”

“Hu ESHOOO!” Very weird. Like I’b dot as bad as two days ago, but still sick. I just couldd’t stadd beidg id bed adybore.”

“I udderstadd. HaiSHOOO!” Candice agreed. Rose poured a cup of coffee for herself and joined her on the couch. The two sat in the quiet living room, the only sound their sneezing and near constant nose-blowing.

Both felt well enough to change out of their pajamas and into some comfortable clothes. Candice put on a gray sweatshirt and black leggings while still wearing her slides. Rose opted for a white cardigan over a long sleeved t shirt and pink sweatpants along with her slippers. Rose put their old robes and pajamas in the washing machine.

Slowly but surely, people started to wake up. Jane, Megan, and Cassie all were slightly better, but still very sick. They got out of bed and occupied the couches in the living room, their feet all resting on the coffee table.

Beth, Kayla, and Shannon were still as sick as can be and were still laid up in the large bed. By 10:00, almost everyone was at least awake. Almost everyone.

Nobody wanted to jinx it, but Danielle hadn’t made an appearance yet. Ever the early riser, it was unheard of for her to still be sleeping at this hour.

A little while later, the girls’ heads turned when they heard one of the bedroom doors open. Given that five of the girls were laying around the living room and three were upstairs, there was only one possible person it could have been.

Danielle emerged wearing a white crew neck sweater, light blue jeans, and white socks.

“Good bordidg everyode. How are you feelidg? *sniff” she asked in a congested voice.

“itchooo! That should explaid it, but I thidk a lot of us baybe Id better shape thad you.” Said Jane.

“What are you ta- TAHCHOOOO!” Danielle let out a huge sneeze uncovered.

“I’b talkidg about that.” Jane rebutted.

“Cobe od, Dadielle. Back id bed.” Rose commanded.

“Yeah, you’re cobidg dowd with this flu . It was odly a batter of tibe.” Jane said.

“Cobe od, Dadielle. You’re dot goidg adywhere.” Said Cassie.

“That’s right, get your pajabas od add start restidg.” Added Megan.

“They’re right. You’re as sick as a dog.” Candice said as she stood up and felt Danielle’s forehead.

“But who’s goidg to take care of everyode? It’s, iCHOOOOOO! By job.”  Danielle said.

“Caddice add I bay still be sick, but we’re doidg better thad the rest of the girls, add were especially doidg better thad you.” Rose suggested.

“Yes, we cad haddle thidgs.” Candice agreed. They both guided Danielle upstairs to the King sized bed. A short while later, she was changed into the white pajamas she bought in town, laying in bed, a tissue stuffed up each of her nostrils. Kayla and Beth returned to their bed downstairs, leaving Shannon and Danielle to themselves.

“He- HAICHOOO! HASHOOOOO!” Shannon sneezed into a tissue. She was sitting cross legged toward the end of the bed.

“I bust say, this flu was do joke after all.” Danielle said as she lay back on her pillows.

“It sure isd’t.” Shannon said before blowing her nose.

“Still, this trip was absolutely perfect frob start to fidish. I’b very lucky to have a sister add friedds who will iddulge by stradgest idterests.” Danielle said.

“You’re worth it. You always bake us feel so cared for. It wasd’t a huge deal to put up with dove sdiffles add sdeezes for a few days to bake you happy.”

“Well, it still beads the world to be. Thadk you.” Danielle sat up and hugged Shannon tightly.

Despite everybody’s condition, everybody pitched in to take care of Danielle. She was now the one with an ice pack on her head,m, living on soup, juice, and tea. At one point Kayla pulled Danielle out of bed and beckoned her to follow her downstairs. Danielle did with a blanket wrapped around her. In the kitchen was the tub of hot water. Danielle sat down and placed her bare feet in the tub, instantly feeling better. Beth then placed a hot water bottle on her head, and Cassie put a thermometer under her tongue. Jane snapped a picture of her, as she looked like a sick character straight out of a movie. She sent it in their bridesmaid’s groupchat with the caption: No getting cold feet now. Danielle was so extremely happy she couldn’t stand it. Even with all the excitement, the flu didn’t make it hard to rest.

After a couple more days, everybody got over their flu and it was time to go home.

A couple of months later, the big day finally arrived. Danielle hadn’t forgotten what they did for her, and she surprised them all with a special gift: a lace handkerchief with each girl’s name sewn on. She left a simple note for each of them: “the next time you get sick, your only job is to use this handkerchief and remember the best trip of my life. Thank you. Love, D.”

It certainly had been a trip of a lifetime, one none of them would ever forget. And one Danielle wouldn’t mind recreating. She truly had the best friends in the whole world.

The end
