THE PRISON

It was a wonderful night, full of bright stars and a beautiful full moon. The night air smelled sweet and rich. It was an excellent night to be outside.

“Too bad you’re stuck inside, Lakota. It’s a beautiful night. Would you like to see?” Syrika asked.

“No, I don’t want to see!” Lakota barked at her.

“Well why not? You never want to look anymore.” Syrika asked tauntingly.

“You know why.” Lakota said, not looking at her.

“Suit yourself. I’m going to my bedchamber. Care to join me?” she teased.

“Never. Not with you.”

“Oh poo. You will never give me the pleasure of your company?”

Lakota didn’t answer her. It had been too long a day to listen to her taunting.

“Ah, Lakota…when will you realize that this is your home now? You will never see anyone else except me again. Soon I will be bored of you and I might not make this offer anymore.” She said as she crossed the room to the large wooden door. “You may be wise to take it while I am still interested.” And with that, she shut the door, and Lakota heard its many locks clasping into place.

It had been weeks since Lakota had seen the outside. He missed it. Syrika had held him for more than a month now. As he peered out of the small bars on the wooden door, he watched Syrika’s silhouette heading for the tall tower that was the bedchamber.

Lakota sighed and slumped over on his bed of straw. When would she let him see Akka again? He wondered if she ever would. But, he knew that Akka had to be alive still, because that was their bargain.

Lakota agreed to be Syrika’s captive if Syrika would spare Akka’s life. Syrika hadn’t counted on Lakota’s celibacy. When Syrika found out, she was furious and locked Lakota up with no contact with the outside world. Lakota was becoming restless. He wished he could see the night, but not with Syrika. He might have gone with her to see the outside if she had let him see Akka, but she hadn’t, and Lakota was angry with her for that.

Since Lakota was not allowed inside any other part of the estate, he had no idea what became of Akka. Syrika indicated that Akka was being forced to do servant work for her, but Lakota knew not whether this was a lie or the truth.

Either way, Lakota could do nothing about it, and so he curled up in his straw bed, and sleep overcame him.

Lakota was awakened by the banging and smashing on his dungeon door. He clutched his head in agony and shouted at the intruder.

“WHAT?” he yelled.

“There is a request for your presence at the estate of Hontevé. You are to attend dinner escorted by the lady Syrika at 8 o’clock in the eve. Your attendance is mandatory if you wish your friend to live.” A formal voice said. Lakota heard footsteps and knew that the messenger had left.

Lakota rubbed his forehead, aggravated by Syrika’s games with him. He had no choice. He had to go. Akka’s life depended on it. He knew that Syrika would come to his dungeon and dress him the way she wanted him, but she would take her time. She wanted him to think about what he was going to do, and whether to accept her offer.

Lakota was not planning on accepting it. Even though it would mean he’d get out of this dungeon and be able to walk freely about the estate, he had pledged that gift to Akka. He would no more break his promise than she would hers.

Later on, when sunlight was pouring in Lakota’s dungeon from the small barred hole in the door, Syrika came. Lakota sat up in his straw bed, and looked at her. She was wearing a dress of a rich green that accentuated the curves of her body and her black hair fell down to curl and sparkle around her neck.

“Hello Lakota. How are you today?” she asked.

“My head hurts. What is that smell?” he asked, catching the scent of a unique perfume. It made his nose tickle.

“Do you like it? It is a new brand. I got it yester- Lakota?” she looked at him puzzled when she saw his face.

“Eh…Eiiiishhhhhh!” Lakota sneezed and it made Syrika jump back. Then, she looked angry.

“Oh, you can’t be allergic to my new perfume! It cost me $60!” she cried, folding her arms. Lakota rubbed his nose, feeling a bit ill. “Sorry.” He said.

“Well, anyway, I have your clothes. Here.” She tossed him a bundle. “I’ll be back for you in one hour. Be ready by then.” She ordered, and then shut his door.

Lakota’s nose still itched, but stopped while he put on the clothes. Syrika had gotten him a light blue long sleeved button up shirt with slit cuffs, and it was completely transparent. He might as well go naked. The pants were a stretchy fabric that fit snugly around his thighs and buttocks. There were small ovals cut out from the pants on the outside of the legs, and a thin lace went through them, but his tan flesh was still visible. He let his black silky hair fall around his shoulders and ending in curled ringlets.

Syrika came in an hour like she had said she would. She was still wearing the green dress, and the scent of the perfume lingered on her. It made Lakota’s eyes water a bit.

“Are you ready, Lakota? You look ready.” She teased.

“Yes, Syrika. I’m ready.” Lakota sighed. Syrika took his arm, and they walked out of the dungeon and down the stone hallway to the dining area.

The dining hall was a beautiful hall. The tables were made of polished oak, and decorated in blues, purples, and greens. The crystal glasses were filled with wine, and the silver platters were piled with food for the feast. Lakota was so hungry. He had only eaten the bit of cheese and bread they brought him for breakfast.

The people were already seated at the tables. The master of the house, Sir Thorrick, and his son, Jareth. The lady Josephine was seated next to them, and on the other side of the table was…

“Akka!” Lakota breathed. Akka was dressed in a royal blue silk dress that fit her as snug as Lakota’s pants. The dress matched her dark blue eyes, which glowed when she saw Lakota.

“Ah, yes. Your lover isn’t it?” Syrika said sarcastically. Lakota huffed at her.

“She looks nice in that dress, now doesn’t she? Would you like to see her?” Syrika asked. Lakota was taken aback by the question. Was it a trick? Syrika didn’t seem to be joking.

“Oh don’t look so surprised! I can be nice sometimes!” Syrika said. “Come. We’ll sit next to her.”

She led Lakota to the seat next to Akka and sat on his other side. Lakota was speechless at the sight of Akka.

“Hello Lakota. I haven’t seen you in a while.” Akka said. She was beautiful, and Lakota felt wonderful to see her face again.

“Hi Akka. How have you been?” he greeted.

“Syrika says that she has a surprise for everyone tonight. That’s why you and I are here.” Akka told him.

“What! What surprise?” Lakota cried, now understanding why Syrika had been so nice to him. She had something planned.

“Lakota? What’s wrong?” Akka asked.

“Syrika-she’s up to something!”

“Lakota, my dear,” Syrika leaned over to whisper to him, “My father is about to give a toast.” Her perfume clinged to her hair, and as it brushed past Lakota’s face, he felt a familiar tickle.

“Eh…” he felt it coming. But he didn’t know what to do about it.

“Lakota, what is it? Oh-” Akka asked, but right when she was going to say something else, she wrapped her hand around his neck, and pulled his face into the bend of her own neck.

“Eiiiishhhhh! Ehhhhshhhh! Mmmxxxxppttt!” Lakota sneezed heavily into her neck, unable to prevent it. Akka soothed him and held him close.

“Akka I-” Lakota whispered, but was cut off by Sir Thorrick standing for the toast.

“This is a toast to wonderful days, and a prosperous new year!” he said, thumping his chest proudly.

Everyone raised their glass and then drank.

“Akka,” Lakota began when they sat down, “I’m sorry for not seeing you. I would have, but-”

“You needn’t explain. I know already.” Akka cut him off.

“You do?”

“Yes. Lakota, I love you. I will wait for you until I die.” She said sincerely.

“I love you too Akka.”

Then, Syrika stood up next to them.

“Father, I have an important announcement to make!” She said.

“Yes my jewel?” Thorrick said.

“Lakota and I are to be wed tomorrow.” Syrika announced. Lakota sat speechless and motionless at the table while cheering surrounded him.
