The professor blinked at him for a moment before he finally remembered. “Ah! Dr. Verago--I’m sorry, I wasn’t expect--eh-excuse me…” He fumbled for his handkerchief, bringing it quickly to his nose. “Hehtshxx! Heh-tshx! Goodness…”

“I’m filling in at the clinic for today.” Darian explained, shaking off his initial surprise and pulling out his stethoscope. “Asthma attack?”

“Hmm? Oh, yes.” Gabriel replied. He seemed rather thrown by being suddenly confronted with a familiar face. “It’s just these blasted allergies, and I didn’t get to my inhaler quite in time to prevent an attack.”

This is so perfect, so fessor, I'm just....can I die a little inside

“Oh please, if you’re to be friends with my Liam, then I must insist on a first-name basis.” Gabriel replied. “Just Gabe, if that’s alright.”

Probably my favorite line, the "my Liam" is just....love, so much love.

Seriously you did wonderful!!!

Title: Lingering

Characters/Pairings: Todd/Cecil

Cause: Illness

“Hfffshuh! Huh-huh! Ah-afshhh!”

“Snnf… Hih-ih! Uh… Uh-huh-hufshhhuh!”

“Ngh… maledire questo dolore… Ehh-efshhuh!”

Todd twitched at each of these outbursts, cursing their apartment complex’s crappy soundproofing.

It had been a week since Todd had brought Cecil soup (an action he’d been repeating each night, leaving a warm container outside his door and knocking, before hastily retreating) and the poor man just couldn’t seem to shake his cold. It wasn’t even getting better; if anything, Cecil sounded even worse.

Todd had been growing more and more agitated with each passing day; that evening, listening to Cecil’s near-constant sneezing, sniffling, and whimpers of pain, he finally couldn’t take it anymore. He had to do something.

Slamming his laptop closed with unnecessary force (the history of economics in the early American colonies was tedious to follow on the best of nights, especially when Todd’s area of interest trended more towards ancient religion and mythology) the student got quickly to his feet, striding purposefully out of his apartment and up to the door right next to it, knocking before he could allow himself to ponder what he was doing.

The moment he knocked, he started pondering. Coincidentally, that was also when he started panicking.

A moment later, Todd heard the sound of shuffling footsteps, a muffled sneeze, and the click of a lock. The door swung open, and Todd’s breath caught in his throat.

“Cecil… God, why didn’t you call me?” He breathed, too stunned to bother with anxiety at the moment. Cecil winced, glancing aside.

He looked positively dreadful. His face was deathly pale, except for twin blooms of pink on his cheeks, and a splash of painful red on his nose, which was drippy and irritated. His hazel eyes were reddened, watering, and fever-glazed. His midnight curls were matted and sweaty. Beads of perspiration shone on his forehead, which he reached up to wipe with yet another silk handkerchief, bringing it down to his nose a second later.

“Whfshhuh!” He sneezed, bending at the waist with the effort, and almost falling to the ground with the second. “Hffshhhuh!” Todd quickly ducked down with him, holding the author up by the shoulders, which were shivering weakly.

Ti ringrazio e mi scuso, Todd…” Cecil murmured, sniffling thinly. “Perhaps id would be best if you stayed away. I’d hade for you do be sick agaid so sood…”

“No way, Cecil, look at you!” Todd fretted, half-carrying his neighbor into the apartment and to the bed, quickly ushering him under the covers. “My god, how did it get this bad, I told you to tell me if you needed anything!”

Io no--apologies.” Cecil switched back to English with a shake of his head, wincing. “I did dot wadt do be a burden. I was dot expectigg do be a c-coh-codcerd--uffshhhuh! Ehh-effshhh! Hffshhhuh! Ngh, accidenti…”

He winced, eyes watering with pain as he brought a hand up to his head. Todd’s heart raced. “Y-your headache is worse, isn’t it?”

Cecil grimaced. “I’b afraid so. Id’s dothigg I cad’t handle, though, I assure you. You needn’t worry yourself with be--”

“‘Needn’t worry,’ my ass, Cecil, have you looked at yourself lately?” Todd asked, indignant. Cecil fell silent as the student carefully felt his forehead. “That’s a fever, and I think you might have a sinus infection, a bad one, if your head’s hurting that bad.”

“I ab dot id so dire straights as I have beed id the past.” He replied, trying for a weak smile. “Add I sure would be worse were it dot for your daily deliveries of soup. Sei un angelo, Todd, grazie.”

“One of these days, you’re gonna have to tell me what that means.” Todd muttered, pulling the covers up to Cecil’s neck. The author’s eyes slid shut.

“Id beads ‘you’re ad angel.’” He murmured.

Todd blushed furiously.

“H-Have you taken any medicine?” He stammered, fumbling for a subject change. Cecil gave a negative hum.

“I’b actually… Ah, whad’s the word? Oh, waid. Cognate. Allergic, to bost bedicatiods. Id’s part of why I bake by teas.” Cecil finished the sentence in a rush, pulling out his handkerchief. “Whffshhhuh! Huh-hhhuh-hufshhhuh! Oh, mio dio, solo alla fine…” He moaned, the sneezes flaring up the pain in his head. “Th-the rebedies do dot seeb do be workigg, however…” He finished, sniffling.

Todd’s heart was breaking at the sight of Cecil in such pain. “Is there… Anything I can do?” Todd asked. “At the very least, let me take you to a doctor in the morning. I don’t have any classes tomorrow, I can totally do it.”

Cecil opened his eyes, looking at Todd with something like confusion… And awe? “I-I… Non ci sono parole… Todd, I assure you, I have dode dothigg do deserve such treatbedt.”

Todd blinked, starting to look confused himself. “What do you mean, ‘deserve?’ Cecil, you’re sick as a dog, and I’m worried, of course I’ll take you to the doctor!”

Cecil suddenly looked on the verge of tears, but he held it together. “Grazie, Todd. If it truly is do trouble, I would be very appreciative of your assistadce.”

Todd nodded, satisfied. Not exactly the first date he’d had in mind, but hey, it would do.

Besides it wasn’t really a date… Right?

Title: Kindness

Characters/Pairings: Todd/Cecil

Cause: Illness

Todd fidgeted nervously, trying to stop himself from getting up and pacing the waiting room. Getting Cecil to the clinic had been no easy feat; the author had been even less steady on his feet that morning, still sneezing and sniffling incessantly, and his fever had only risen. He’d almost passed out by the time Todd had managed to wrestle him into a cab, and was still pale from the effort when they’d arrived at the clinic.

Cecil, though extremely grateful for Todd’s bringing him here, had insisted that he undergo the examination alone. That was nearly an hour ago; Todd was getting more and more anxious by the second.

Just when he was seriously considering going into the back rooms to try and find him, Cecil trudged back out. His glassy, hazel eyes scanned the room, and lit up with an (albeit tired) smile when he caught sight of Todd. The student smiled nervously back, quickly rushing forward to help support the wobbly author.

“I caddot thagk you edough for this, Todd.” Cecil repeated for about the eightieth time. “I really do appreci-ahh--affshuhh! Hhh-whfffshhuh!” He’d managed to grab his handkerchief in time to cover the two sneezes, though the cloth didn’t help with the throbbing pain in his head, causing him to wince.

Todd bit his lip. “No prob, Cecil. Uh… What’s the verdict?”

Cecil frowned as Todd led him outside to attempt to hail a cab. “V-verdict?” He pronounced carefully.

“Prognosis, result? What’d the doctor say?” Todd elaborated patiently.

“Ah!” Cecil nodded in comprehension. “A sidus idfectiod, as you predicted. Add a bought of flu, of all thiggs.”

Todd hummed in concern, managing to hail down a cab and usher his sick neighbor inside. Cecil sniffled miserably as Todd gave the cabbie the address of their apartment complex. During the short drive, Cecil continued to explain the results of his examination; or tried to, at least.

La mia febbre era troppo alto per il comfort, a quanto pare. E--” He murmured tiredly, before Todd cut him off.

“Uh, Cecil… I’m sorry, but…” Todd stammered, blushing. “I-Italian?”

Cecil blinked at him uncomprehendingly for a moment before he finally realised. “Oh, sono un idiota--by sidcerest apologies.”

“It’s okay.” Todd assured him, then tried a weak laugh. “At this rate, I’m gonna have to learn Italian myself.”

Cecil blushed furiously, actually seeming broken up about his mistake. “I’b truly sorry…” He apologised again, before continuing to explain in English. “The doctor, he said by fever was too high for cobfort; 102.6, I believe, though I’b dot used to your beasure--beasurebedts--hfffshuh! Effshhuh! Whfffshhh!”

Todd winced. “Yeah, that’s really not great. What did he say about treatment?”

Cecil shrugged. “Fluids, rest, add food? Dothigg buch to do bud wait id oud, especially sidce bedicide is bore or less out of the ques-tiod--effshhhuh! Ngh… Se solo questo dolore sarebbe svanito, sarei bene.” He muttered, sniffling into his handkerchief.

“D-dolore… Is that pain?” Todd asked. Cecil glanced over in surprise, nodding. Todd smiled sheepishly. “I, uh… Took Spanish in high school. ‘Pain’ was ‘dolor,’ I just recognized it, and wondered…”

“The two languages do share certaid sibilarities.” Cecil agreed as the cab pulled over in front of their building. Todd payed the driver as Cecil stumbled out of the car, shivering in the cold, morning air.

“As do Italiad add English, though dot quite as bady as I’d like, I’b afraid.” Cecil continued as Todd circled around to help him into the building. As soon as they were in the elevator, Cecil sighed. “I kdow you probably tire of hearigg it, but thagk you agaid for this, Todd. I truly do appreciate it greatly. You didd’t have to do this for be.”

“Well, it didn’t do much good in the end.” Todd retorted, discontented. “All you got was the standard ‘drink water and rest’ response. I was hoping he might be able to suggest some alternate medications, at least.”

Dobbiamo--apologies.” Cecil corrected himself as the elevator doors slid open on their floor. He continued as they trudged slowly down the hall to the author’s apartment. “We must sibply wait it out, I’b ahh-affshhhuh! Hhih-effshhh! Whfshhhuh! Ngh… I’b afraid, scusami…”

“No need to apologize.” Todd didn’t need to know Italian to understand that last word. They entered Cecil’s apartment, and Todd escorted him straight to his bed. Once the author was tucked in, he asked; “Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable, at least? Some tea, soup, anything?”

“Oh, I could’t possibly, Todd, you have dode bore thad edough.” Cecil insisted. “I will be fide, I assure you. Id fact, I believe I ab already od the mend.”

Todd wanted to protest that Cecil seemed even worse today than he had yesterday, which was saying something, but couldn’t work up the nerve. Sighing, the student conceded.

“If you’re sure.” He muttered. “I’ll come by and check on you in the morning before classes, sound good?”

Cecil smiled. “Sei un angelo, Todd, veramente. You are too good to be.”

Todd blushed, reduced to muttering his goodbyes incomprehensibly by Cecil’s flattery, which followed the student home, carrying him through his studying all day and afternoon, and lulling him to sleep that night. So distracted was he that he didn’t notice the suspicious lack of ill sounds from the other side of the wall that had kept him up all throughout the previous week.

Title: Hiding

Characters/Pairing: Cecil/Todd

Cause: Illness

Cecil awoke abruptly, to the sound of a frantic voice and the sensation of being very cold. Not the most pleasant wake-up call in the world, but certainly not his worst by far.

It took him far longer than it should have to pinpoint the voice, much less open his eyes; ugh, if only his head would stop pounding, then maybe Cecil could think for a moment…

“Cecil?! Cecil please, wake up, seriously, wake up!”

That voice… So sweet, so familiar, but so frantic! Cecil wanted to comfort it, wanted to hear it happy, so he did as it asked.

Beautiful brown eyes, perfectly framed in silver, stared back at him. The face, pale like porcelain but sprayed with a perfect array of freckles, was pinched in sharp concern. Though Todd was no less handsome for it, still Cecil frowned. He just wanted his lovely, sweet neighbor to smile again.

Per favore, non ti preoccupare. Sono qui, vedo?” Cecil tried to reassure him, but if anything the frown deepened. Though those pale cheeks were darkened slightly by a blush. Hmm.

“Cecil, why are you on the floor of your bathroom?” Todd asked gently. Cecil frowned, considering the question. It took him a while to translate it, and a while longer to understand it. Why was he on the floor of the bathroom? Ah! That’s right!

Non volevo svegliarti. Le pareti non sono molto spesse. Ma le pareti del bagno non si collegano con il vostro.” Cecil explained, then tried for a weak smile. Then sneezed. “Hffshhuh! Efshhhuh! Afshhhuh!”

Todd bit his beautiful, shapely lower lip, blushing even more. “Cecil, I am so, so sorry, but I can’t understand a word you’re saying.”

Cecil frowned. “Perchè no?

Todd sighed. “Cecil, you’ve been speaking Italian this whole time.”

A beat. Two. Three.

Cecil’s eyes widened in horror. “I-I ab so sorry, I had do idea--” God strike me down now, not again!

His dear, sweet Todd jumped to placate him. “No, no, nonono, it’s fine, Cecil, really!” The author sniffled as Todd reassured him. “I just need to know what happened. Plus, I think your fever’s higher. Can you explain while I get you into bed?”

Cecil nodded, sighing as Todd hefted him up with some effort. “I was tryigg dot to worry you. The walls are so thid… I didd’t wadt to keep you up with my noise. So I boved to the bathroob.”

Todd froze, halfway out of the bathroom. “Y-you… What…?” He stammered, uncomprehendingly.

“Did I slip idto Italiad agaid?” Cecil asked in dismay. His neck was at a slightly awkward angle, but he could see Todd’s head shake “no.”

“Okay, that’s it.” Todd muttered. “You’re coming over to my place. And I’m staying right with you until this is under control.”

Cecil’s heart skipped a beat. Kind, sweet Todd… But no, it would never do! “Todd, pleah--afshhhuh! Whffshhh! Ngh…” Ah, maledire questo dolore… “Please, I assure you, I haved’t dode adythigg to eard such care. You’ve dode so buch for be, I ab forever id your debt, but I would hate for you to codtract this as well!”

“Earn…?” Todd seemed confused, for some reason, as he continued half-carrying Cecil to his apartment. “Okay, first thing, I don’t care about getting sick. Second, I’ve probably already caught it if I’m going to catch it. Third, why do you keep saying that?”

Cecil sniffled, glancing around as they entered the student’s apartment; not much decoration, sure, but a distinctly well-lived, well-loved feel. How very fitting.

“Cecil?”

“Apologies!” Cecil exclaimed, then coughed slightly. “Well, because it’s true, Todd, I caddot eved begid to ibagide what bakes you thigk I could possibly deserve such kinddess as you have showd be these past few days.”

By the time Cecil had finished explaining, he found himself in Todd’s own (messily made, bless him) bed, tucked under the comforter tenderly by the student himself. Todd sat himself down on the edge of the bed, gazing at Cecil and worrying his lip.

“But that’s what’s confusing me.” He persisted, troubled. It saddened Cecil, to see him like this. What the author wouldn’t give to see that smile of his, the one that almost seemed to have to fight its way to the surface, constantly struggling to emerge. “Why do you think it has to be earned?”

Cecil blinked. “Why else would you go to such lengths for be?”

Something in Todd’s expression fluctuated for a moment, and Cecil realized in dismay that, for a second, Todd looked like he might cry. “I-I mean, um…” The student stammered, grasping for an example. “Wh-why did you give me that tea set?”

“You were sick, I wadted to help.” Cecil answered promptly. That was easy.

“Right.” Todd nodded. “So… What did I do to earn that?”

Cecil wanted to give an honest answer; you existed. But that seemed a little too… Forward, even to his fever-addled mind that kept throwing out Italian when he asked for English. So instead he said, “You didd’t deed to eard it.”

“Then why do you?” Todd asked. Cecil frowned. He still hadn’t smiled.

“Well, id’s two edtirely differedt thiggs.” Cecil tried. “Hhhuh-uffshhhuh! Ehfshhh! Ngh…” Curse that ache!

Todd seemed like he wanted to continue, but decided against it, seeing Cecil wince in pain. “Never mind, we can… W-we can talk about this later, let’s just see… I think you left me some tea that you said helped with headaches, I’ll go make you some of that!”

Cecil watched, torn between dismay (that sweet, kind Todd was leaving) and relief (that sweet, kind Todd wasn’t quite as melancholic anymore), as the student jumped up to go brew a cup of Cecil’s own homemade tea. The author sighed, snuggling a little deeper into the blankets despite himself. He wondered why Todd was so distressed about that subject. It’d be so much easier to think about if it didn’t feel like his brain was being pressure cooked…

I'm kind of leaving an all-encompassing comment here because there is no way I can say something about every single drabble without making it half as long as the thread itself, but WOW these are lovely. I haven't been active on the forum for a while, but earlier this week I discovered "Irredeemable" and have since been frantically searching the forum for more of your writing. I didn't even realize there was so much, but I love ALL of it, and your characters are just. YES. I don't even know what word I want to use to say how awesome these stories and drabbles are. I absolutely adore Kaije and Percy (it's probably the fevers...fevers are wonderful). It seems like every time I turn around there's someone new to read about, like now there's Todd and Cecil and it's like how many of these boys are there, I'm so excited for more. X3 GUH, sorry for just gushing about these so much but your writing is what's gotten me back scouring the forum.

ANYWAY, even though I haven't really said anything specific, I have been reading and rereading and loving every single one of these, and all the rest of your stuff. Thanks for sharing them with us! :D

Title: Taxing

Characters/Pairings: Nick/Darian

Cause: Allergies

It was nearly midnight by the time Darian made it home; the fact that he went straight to Nick’s apartment, asking to sleep there for the night, without even pausing by his own place to change, set off warning bells at the back of the lab tech’s mind.

“Yeah, sure, Doc, of course.” Nick replied, stepping aside to allow his boyfriend entry. The fact that Darian hadn’t changed didn’t matter; he kept a few spare sets of clothes here anyway. “Something the-ehh--etchhhuh! Hetchhhuh! Ishhhhuh! Ugh, snnnf, sorry. Something the matter?”

“Do you need your inhaler?” Darian asked, but his tone suggested the question was more automatic than concerned; the two proceeded to the bedroom, Nick (already in pajamas) sitting on the bed as Darian changed.

“Nah, not too wheezy today--” Nick got himself back on track. “Hey, seriously, are you okay? You look… Not okay.”

Darian, back turned to Nick (shirtless, no less… Nick wasn’t about to complain) sighed, shoulders slumping. “It’s nothing, darling. Really. Just a… Rough day at work.”

Nick frowned. “What kind of rough day?”

Darian was silent for a moment, pulling a t-shirt over his head. With his back still turned to Nick, he finally confessed, “I lost a patient today.”

Nick’s breath caught in his throat; in a second, he had wrapped his arms around Darian’s waist, resting his head against his shoulder. “Oh, Darian, I’m so sorry!”

“Don’t apologize; it wasn’t your fault.” Darian responded, allowing Nick to turn him around and hug him properly. Nick pulled back, staring right into Darian’s bright green eyes.

“And it wasn’t your fault, either.” He said firmly. “Darian, you can’t save everyone, these things just happen sometimes, and it’s no one’s fault. It’s just… Life.”

“I know that, but…” Darian sighed, letting his eyes fall closed. “It’s still my job to try. And failing… It’s not the first time, it won’t be the last, I know, but…”

Wordlessly, Nick pulled Darian to the bed, and sat him down. The lab tech crawled up behind him, pulling Darian’s hair out of its ponytail and detangling it slowly, soothingly.

“Is there anything I can do to help you with this?” Nick asked. Darian sighed, head shaking in Nick’s hands. Nick was quiet for a moment, just running his hands through the doctor’s hair, before a sudden idea occurred to him.

¿Sabías yo hablo español?” Nick asked, murmuring the question in Darian’s ear. “No pienso que te dije.

“N-Nick…” Darian’s voice wavered slightly. Nick smiled.

¿Sabías que te quiero?” He continued, switching ears. “¿Sabías que eres maravilloso, y inteligente, y bueno…?

“Y-you do know I don’t understand a word you’re saying, r-right?” Darian asked, but the shiver that ran down his spine let Nick know that his plan was working.

¿Pero puedes adivinar, sí?” Nick countered, nuzzling the doctor’s neck. “¿Qué voy a llamarte, hmm? ¿Te gusta ‘mi querido’?

Darian squirmed slightly, and Nick let out a small laugh. “No necesitas hablar, querido. Yo sé te gusta mi español.

A sweet kiss to the nape of his neck, and Darian swallowed, turning around. “Fine. Consider me sufficiently distracted, darling.”

Nick laughed again, capturing his lips in a kiss. “That was the goal, querido.”

---

Translations:

¿Sabías yo hablo español? - Did you know I speak Spanish?

No pienso que te dije. - I don't think I told you.

¿Sabías que te quiero? - Did you know I love you?

¿Sabías que eres maravilloso, y inteligente, y bueno…? - Did you know that you're wonderful, smart, good...?

¿Pero puedes adivinar, sí? - But you can guess, right?

¿Qué voy a llamarte, hmm? ¿Te gusta ‘mi querido’? - What am I going to call you, hmm? Do you like "my love?"

No necesitas hablar, querido. Yo sé te gusta mi español. - You don't need to talk, love. I know you like my Spanish.

---

Side-Note: I did much of the translation myself (though I'm hardly fluent in Spanish) so any errors, I apologize for!

Side-Side-Note: "querido" can mean anything from love to dear, darling, sweetheart... It's basically a Spanish pet-name, and I thought it would be nice if Nick had one for Darian ("Doc," though cute, is not very romantic ;) )
