77. A Sick Dingus

Robin watched Steve as he bent over a stack of movies, meticulously alphabetizing them. Hawkins’ local Family Video was empty this Saturday morning and had been eerily quiet. 

Steve too had been quiet. Well, not exactly quiet. He’d been “discretely” clearing his throat and wiping his nose all morning and was very obviously coming down with a cold. 

Robin watched his hand tremble as he moved a film to the top of the stack. His head bobbed as he sneezed, and he tried to muffle it against the sleeve of his pullover. “Hh’MCHMF!”

As he was carefully wiping the tip of his nose, Robin snuck up behind him and stood there patiently, waiting for the right moment.

“Was that a sneeze?” she asked loudly, causing Steve to start and lose his balance. 

He glared at her. “Really? What do you have to do that?”

“Because,” she said, rocking back on her heels playfully. “You’re sick.” 

Steve blushed, secretly angry that he would even be embarrassed about something as simple as catching a cold. “You wish. I don’t get sick, Robin.” 

“No? Why do you look like Rudolph then, huh?”

“I don’t,” he shot back, annoyed. “Besides, it’s like the middle of July.” 

Robin rolled her eyes. “You can still come down with a cold in summer. It’s pretty common, actually.” 

“What, are you a d-doctor?” His voice trembled with the need to sneeze, and he hated himself for it. 

“Uh oh, tough guy,” Robin said, smirking. “You look like you have to sneeze.” 

Please for the love of God, don’t sneeze. “I don’t.” Even as the words left his lips, Steve felt his nostrils flare. He pressed his knuckles up against his nose, begging it to behave. 

“You sure?” Robin was clearly getting some form of enjoyment out of Steve’s misery. 

His breathing was ragged and he knew the fight was lost. With an involuntary but dramatic gasp, Steve pitched forward into cupped hands with a barely-contained double. “H-hih’SSHHHP! Heh’TSHHH!” 

“Bless—”

Steve held up a shaking finger before spasming again with a third sneeze that seemed to rip right through him. “Huh’RSHHOO!” 

“Bless you,” Robin said, finally. She watched him blink back tears and wipe his running nose with his sleeve. He was pitiful.

“You’re such a dingus,” she said, extending her hand and helping him to his feet. “How on Earth are we going to pick up girls with you sneezing your brains out all over the place?”

A picture truly was worth a thousand words. At least Jonathan thought so. 
It was certainly worth spending hours in the darkroom — studying negatives, choosing which images were keepers, which were not. It certainly was a rotten time to have a cold, though.

He felt his sinuses prickle and tried not to breathe through his nose. It didn’t matter, though. He knew he was going to sneeze. 

“Huh’TSHHHUH!”

Jonathan sniffled, turning back toward the table he was working on. He sniffed again, trying to stop his nose from running, and when he realized that wasn’t working, pulled out a crumpled napkin from his pocket and blew his nose.

He felt gross and if he wasn’t so self-conscious, he’d like Nancy to take care of him. Maybe they’d stay in, rent a scary movie, and he’d have actual tissues to blow his nose in. 

Jonathan shook his head, as if to clear it from all the pleasant, domestic scenarios he was playing out in his head. His nostrils twitched again and with a shaking gasp, he barely had time to get his hands up. 

“H-hih! Heh’SSHHHP! Hh’RRSHHH!”

His head pounded and he contemplated going home for the day. No, no, goddammit. He was going to stay and finish processing these images if it was the last thing—

Suddenly, light flooded the room. As Jonathan squinted into the light, trying to see who the fuck opened the door, the brightness teased another sneeze out of him, without warning. Or two.

“TSHHHHHHUH! H-hih’TSHHHH!”

“Bless you,” Nancy exclaimed, standing in the doorway. She held up a paper sack. “I brought you some lunch — chicken noodle.” 

He couldn’t even make himself get angry at the ruined images. Maybe he was too tired. 

“Yeah,” he said thickly. “Soup sounds great.”

Grantaire and Enjolras sat outside a local café, sipping their respective drinks. For Grantaire, it was an Irish coffee. Enjolras, sitting across from him, had a matcha latte. 

The two were engaged in friendly chit-chat until a spring breeze seemed to whip up the invisible allergens into the air, irritating Enjolras’ twitching nose. He turned away from Grantaire, his blond curls bouncing in his face. 

“H-hih’SHH! Hh’GNNT! Nh’XXT!” He sniffled, recovering, and let a finger trail under his nose, alleviating the itch somewhat. 

When he glanced back up, he noticed Grantaire was staring at him. 

“What?”

“Nothing,” Grantaire said, laughing. “It’s just that you have those — what shall we call them — kitten-esque sneezes? And it doesn’t help that you’re a very allergic person. You command the room and in some ways, your nose does too.” 

Enjolras flushed, annoyed. “I do not. And even if they do sound like that, I c-cahhh… can’t help it.” He took a sip of his latte, sulking all the while. 

“I know, I know. It’s just…” Grantaire trailed off, unsure of where he was going. 

“It’s just — h-hang on,” Enjolras sputtered, shakily placing his cup down. “Nh’TSH! Ah’NGGT! H-hih… Hh’XXT!” 

He sniffled, scrubbing at his nose, while Grantaire watched. “It’s just what?” Enjolras asked him. 

“It’s just cute,” Grantaire said decidedly. “It’s cute.”

80. Love-Hate Relationship

It’d only been one day since Jonathan had beat Steve to a pulp and yet here they were together. Detention.

Jonathan was in the front desk, staring straight ahead, and Steve was seated at a desk behind him, sulking.

His eye was still swollen shut from where Jonathan hit him and Steve’s entire body ached. He shifted in his seat, trying to get comfortable. 

The teacher at the front of the room shushed him without looking up from the book he was reading. Steve resisted the urge to roll his eyes and groan. 
Sitting in detention and in silence was a new type of torture. All Steve could think of was Nancy and how horrible he felt, physically and let’s face it, emotionally. 

The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop and with a sinking feeling, Steve realized he was going to sneeze. He swallowed nervously, felt how sore his throat was, and before he could do anything real to stop himself, sneezed. 

“H-heh’SHHUHH!” A chill ripped through him and he felt his skin react with goosebumps. Come to think of it, maybe there was another reason he felt so achy. 

“Bless you,” the teacher said as he stood up. “I’m going to the teacher’s lounge. Not one of you move a muscle.” He glared at Jonathan and Steve before leaving. 

Steve sniffled and swallowed, feeling like there was a lump in his throat. He cleared it. 

“Can you quit?” Jonathan asked, turning around to look at him. 

“What are you looking at, freak?” It was a feeble attempt to sound mean. 

Jonathan rolled his eyes. “Your constant sniffing. It’s annoying.” 

Steve sniffled. “Oh, it’s annoying, is it? Yeah, by all means, I’ll stop.” He sniffled again, on purpose this time. Unfortunately, this one triggered another sneeze. 

“Hh’TSHHUHH!” Steve felt his eyes water and snapped forward with a second. “Heh’SHHH!” 

“Okay, now you’re just doing this on purpose.” 

But Jonathan stared at him and started to pick up on a few key details. Steve was pale and sweating, with dark circles under both eyes. His right eye was swollen shut and looked painful, and Jonathan felt a twinge of guilt. As Steve sniffled again, Jonathan watched his nostrils twitch.

“H-hahh… hah’SHHHUH!” Steve sneezed into his hands but heard Jonathan get up. 

He blearily opened his good eye, just in time to see Jonathan toss a handful of tissues in his general direction. Despite himself, Steve grabbed a few and buried his itching nose in them, blowing. 

“You know, it’s because your sneezing is so damn annoying,” Jonathan said. “I still think you’re an asshole.”

Steve shivered, teeth chattering. “I k-know. I hate you too.” 

Even so, he let Jonathan give him his jacket.

81. The Simple Things

Bucky was sick. He knew it. 

His throat had that sore, shitty feeling he got just before he came down with a cold, and his head felt heavy. Just what he needed. A damn headcold right after Steve had gotten over the flu. 

Bucky trudged through the snowy streets of New York back to their shared apartment. They were living together because times had gotten harder since Steve’s mother passed and it was no secret that splitting the rent was more reasonable. 

His bare hand closed around the doorknob of their place and opened the door, welcoming the smell of something cooking. Something good. 

“Hi,” Steve called out from the kitchen. “I’m fixing up some soup. How was work?”

The radio was playing something soft and Bucky resisted the urge to sink into the nearest chair. 

“Good,” he tried to say, but to his embarrassment, no sound came out. He cleared his throat. “Good.”

Steve tried not to smile at Bucky’s red cheeks and nose. “Cold out there?” 

Bucky sniffled against the back of his hand. “A l-little. Huh’SHHHH!” He caught the sneeze in his hand and scrambled to get his handkerchief out of his pocket. 

Steve watched him carefully as he blew his nose. “Your hands are shaking, Buck.” 

He quickly lowered the heat and sat with Bucky on their couch. 

“Are they?” Bucky laughed harshly, clearing his throat again. He felt Steve grab his hand and let out a gasp. 

“You’re freezing! Where are your gloves?”

Bucky sniffled miserably, trying not to show it. “I, uh, dropped them off the pier. Accident.” 

“Bucky,” Steve whispered, holding Bucky’s hands in his. “It’s too cold to go without things like your coat or your gloves. Especially working out there on the docks— Hey, are you listening to me?”

Steve studied Bucky’s face, particularly his eyes, which seemed glazed over. “Buck?”

Suddenly, he snapped forward with a series of wet sneezes. “H-heh’SHHH! Hur’SHHHUH!” He fumbled for a handkerchief but Steve pressed his own into Bucky’s hands. 

“You feeling okay?” His voice sounded small and far away, but Bucky nodded anyway. 

“My n-nose just itches is all.” He snuffled into the handkerchief but held on to it, hands still trembling. “Sorry Steve, I’ve gotta— hep’SHHHH! Hahh… ahhH! Ah’TSHHHUH!”

“Bless, Buck,” Steve whispered, rubbing Bucky’s back. “Are you cold?”

“Steve, I’m f-fihhh… fine.” 

“Stop lying to me.” 

Bucky glanced at Steve through bleary eyes, sniffling again. “I’m sorry. I just don’t want you to worry. It’s just a little cold.” 

“Doesn’t seem so little to me,” Steve said, watching Bucky’s nostrils flare. 

“C’mon.” Bucky sank to the floor, shivering. “Let’s make a fort out of the cushions, like we used to do when we were little. R-remember?”

Steve nodded, snagging a few blankets off the couch. “Yeah, yeah. Okay.” He draped one of the blankets over Bucky, who pulled it tighter around himself. 

“You warm enough?” Steve asked, laying his head on Bucky’s chest. 

“Yeah,” Bucky said, nodding. “I am now.”

Murray loudly placed two yellow plates in front of his guests. “Breakfast is served.”

Jonathan and Nancy were staying at Murray’s place for a few days and both of them were feeling pretty good, having made a solid plan to expose Hawkins Lab. Well, one of them was feeling good. One of them wasn’t.

“Heh’KGNNNT!” Jonathan had a knuckle pressed against the underside of his nose, as if that could help contain it.

“Bless you,” Nancy said, looking down at her plate of eggs.

The three sat in relative silence, the only sounds being Jonathan’s quiet sniffling and the scraping of fork on plate.

“So, Jonathan,” Murray began. “How was the pullout?”

Jonathan choked on his orange juice, some of it dribbling down his lip.

“I’m sorry?”

“The sofa.”

Murray was talking about the sleeping situation, obviously. The pullout couch.

“It was, uh,” Jonathan trailed off, rubbing at his nose. “Good. A little drafty in there though.”

“I bet it was,” Murray said, grinning.

Nancy tried to focus on what she was eating, but ended up making nervous conversation. “You know, these are so good. These eggs are just… perfect. And the orange juice, I mean, is this homemade?”

Before Murray had time to give her a sarcastic reply, Jonathan was sneezing again.

“Heh’XXXXT! Oh. E-ehh… excuse m-me,” he stammered, turning away from the table and stifling into a napkin. “Hih’TTTSH!”

He sheepishly rubbed his nose, looking down at his plate too.

“Bless you,” Nancy said again, this time looking concerned. “Are you okay?”

“F-fine,” Jonathan told her. “Juhhh… j-just something’s irritating my— hh’SHHHP! AH’XXXNT!”

Next to them, Murray laughed. “Oh, you two.”

“What?” Nancy snapped, annoyed. “What’s funny?”

“You’re going to be sneezing too, soon enough,” Murray said. “Just give it two days. A cold usually takes about two days to come on anyway.”

When Robin walked in late to her shift, Steve didn’t really think too much about it. But when he got closer and saw her red-rimmed, watering eyes, he assumed the worst.

“Are you… crying?”

She threw her hands up in the air, frustrated. “Why does everyone think that? Can’t I be miserable in other ways?”

Robin made her way behind the counter and sniffled, scrubbing roughly at her nose with the palm of her hand. She gasped dramatically twice and sneezed into cupped hands. “H-hih’NNNGT! Hh’XXXXT! Ugh.”

Steve gave her what he imagined was a sympathetic look. “Sick?”

“No, it’s worse,” Robin said thickly, wiping her nose on her wrist. “Allergies.”

She collapsed into a chair and put her head in her hands, groaning. “Can’t spring be over?”

“Uh, it just started,” Steve said, oblivious to the idea of a rhetorical question.

Robin glared at him through bleary eyes. She opened her mouth to say something, but instead her mouth went slack and she gasped again, breath hitching. “O-ohh, for f-fuck’s sahhh… s-sake— hh’KKKNT! Hah’RSHHHT!”

Steve started at her, unsure what to do. “Do you want me to run and get you some… uh, something?”

She shook her head, sniffling. “No. Nothing helps. Not really.”

“I’m sure it’ll get better. We’ve only got…” Steve craned his neck around to get a glimpse of the time. “We’ve only got six more hours.”

“I c-can’t last that l-long,” Robin said in between tiny gasps before she snapped forward with another pair of head-bobbing, half-stifled sneezes. “H-hih’GNNNT! Ahh… hahhH! Hah’SHHHH!”

Steve’s shift began about an hour before Robin’s, so when he finally caught glimpse of her in the vicinity, riding in on her bike, he smiled. Finally.

The pair had become even better friends since starting at Family Video and it was really nice to have a friend — a genuine friend who cared.

“Afternoon, dingus,” Robin greeted him as she swung the door open. The tip of her nose was a bright red, like she’d been rubbing at it all morning, and her cheeks were pink.

“You’re sick, aren’t you?” Steve said as she made her way behind the counter to clock in.

“Nope,” she chirped, smiling. “What g-gave you thah… th-that idea?”

Steve rolled his eyes. “Huh, I don’t know, maybe the fact that—”

“H-hihhh… hih’XXXT!” Robin’s pinched her nose shut to stifle the sneeze as her head bobbed forward. “Hh’NNNT!”

Steve cleared his throat and started over. “Maybe the fact that—”

“Heh’KNNNT!”

“Jesus, Robin, really?”

She sniffled, scrubbing her nose with the palm of her hand. “Sorry, I had to sneeze.”

“Obviously. You’re sick!”

She ignored Steve, and continued to organize the store’s latest arrivals: Ghostbusters, Gremlins, and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. “I am not.”

Steve let her work in quiet for a few minutes, listening to her constant sniffles. He watched Robin’s hands start to shake as she picked up the store’s copy of The Karate Kid just before she lost her losing battle.

“Hh’XXXXT! Heh’PSHH!”

“Hey, Robin?” Steve asked innocently, standing behind her.

“Yeah?” She turned around, not expecting him to be so close to her, and didn’t even see his hand coming in to feel her forehead.

Steve’s mouth dropped open at the temperature of her skin. Robin ducked away from him, but it was too late.

“Robin, you have a fever!”

She shook her head, laughing. “You wish. It’s just because I b-biked here and I’m still — hh’NNSHHH! — I’m still — hh’SHHHH!” Robin sneezed fiercely, trying her best to hold her sneezes in. “Hoo. It’s because I’m still hot and sweaty from my ride.”

Steve stared at her in disbelief. “You’ve sneezed like 80 times just in the first few minutes of your shift.”

“Listen Steve,” Robin said, furiously rubbing her nose before she began speaking. “I’m telling you, this is just one moment in time. Okay? So in life, you have thousands of these moments and you just… you just…” She trailed off, her eyes watering and her face going slack.

“You just…?”

“Hah’RSHHHH! Hap’SHHHH!”

“Okay, gotcha. So that was just your fever talking.”

Jim was walking through the forests of Qo’noS, phaser set to stun. Without warning, the ground shook, causing Jim to lose his balance. The earth below him trembled again and this time, Jim woke with a start.

“Huh’SCHHHUH!”

The bed shook and Jim blearily opened an eye, trying to see through the darkness. “Bones?”

He stretched out an arm, feeling for the two men next to him. “Spock?”

The mattress trembled again and this time Jim realized why. “Hh’CHHH!”

It was a sneeze. It was Spock’s sneeze.

Jim felt for the Vulcan and wrapped his arms around him. “Bless you,” he whispered into his ear.

Spock sniffled a little, wide awake. His throat hurt terribly and he felt so unbearably hot, even though their bed was directly underneath a ceiling fan. He was usually so comfortable with Jim and Bones but tonight was… different.

A small cough escaped his lips and he cleared his throat, trying not to wake up Jim again or god forbid, Bones. Unfortunately, the tickle in him grew exponentially worse, and Spock was forced to sit up as the cough racked through him.

As he hacked desperately into his fist, Bones grunted awake in panic. “Spock?”

Jim was up again too and fumbled to turn on the bedroom lamp. “You okay, babe?”

The light illuminated the green tint in Spock’s cheeks as his cough died down. He let out a shaky exhale. “I am… fine.”

“Did you have a bad dream?” Jim asked, as Bones groped inside his bedside table for his medical tricorder.

“No, I— that is not necessary,” he told Bones, gently pushing his hand away. “I am perfectly w-wehhh… w-well.”

“Well, I’m not gonna take your word for it,” Bones snapped, scanning him anyway.

The tricorder beeped almost instantly and Spock sighed. He knew exactly what was about to happen. McCoy glared at him.

“Is he okay?” Jim asked, rubbing the underside of Spock’s wrist.

“He’s got a temperature of 107,” Bones said disapprovingly, placing the back of his hand on Spock’s forehead. “Does your head hurt? Anything like that?”
Spock slowly nodded. “Yes, a b-bit— huh’ESHHHHUH!” He gasped before sneezing again into cupped hands. “Huh’RRRSHHOOO!”

“Bless,” Jim said, rubbing his back. “Why didn’t you wake us up if you weren’t feeling good?”

“I did not want to inconvenience either of you,” he sniffled, rubbing his nose with a slender finger. “You both were s-sleeping comfortably.”

“Spock, if you’re sick, you’ve gotta let us know,” Bones said, carefully measuring out medicine and handing a capsule to him. “We can’t help if you don’t let us know, okay?”

The Vulcan nodded, shivering. “O-okay.”

“You should be feeling a little better in a few minutes,” Bones said as Jim turned off the light. “But you’ve got to wake us up if you feel any worse. Promise?”

He pulled the blankets up and rubbed Spock’s shoulders comfortingly. Bones felt Spock’s muscles tense before he heard his small inhale.

“Hh’TSHHHH! Promise,” Spock said, snuffling into Jim’s neck.

Jonathan and Steve were at the local Hawkins library, studying for once.

Normally, Steve liked to do things on his own, but statistics wasn’t his forte. He wasn’t sure it was anyone’s forte until Nancy off-handedly mentioned how good at it Jonathan was. So he’d agreed to help Steve with an assignment but had come down with a cold the night before.

“Heh’TSCHUHH!”

The sneeze startled Steve completely and he looked up from a stat problem to see Jonathan scrubbing at his nose with the back of his hand.

“Bless you,” Steve said, somewhat suspiciously. “Are you sick?”

Jonathan glanced at him nervously and shook his head. His voice was hoarse and he didn’t want to respond right away if he didn’t have to.

As Steve continued to scribble away at the problem on his worksheet, Jonathan sniffled and eventually put his head down at the table to close his eyes for a second. The table’s surface was cool and felt incredible on Jonathan’s skin. He sighed contently, without really meaning to.

He was exhausted and had been up all night, coughing. What he really wanted to do was sleep but he did promise he’d help Steve.

“Um, Jonathan?”

Jonathan was ripped out of his thoughts by Steve poking him on the shoulder with a pencil. “You want to just call it a day? I think I get it.”

Jonathan sat up and peered over at Steve’s worksheet. “You haven’t even finished the first problem.”

“Yeah, I know,” Steve said, noticing Jonathan’s flushed cheeks and feeling a twinge of guilt. “I know, but really, I think I get it now. Let’s just go.”

“If it’s because you think I’m sick, I’m not,” Jonathan told him. “I was just up late, that’s all.”

Steve shook his head. “I don’t know, I mean, you’re eyes are all glassy and you’re…” He trailed off to reach a hand out and feel Jonathan’s forehead. Jonathan was so surprised he didn’t even try to stop Steve.

“I mean, you definitely have a fever, okay? I know that,” Steve said, clucking. “I say we head home.”

“You’re just trying to — hih’SCZSHHUH — trying to get out of statistics,” Jonathan said as he sneezed into the crook of his arm. He blinked dizzily and willed the world in front of him to stop spinning.

“Lets. Go. Home,” Steve insisted, packing up Jonathan’s bag for him. “And Jonathan?”

“Y-yeah?” Jonathan stammered, in the midst of fighting of a sneeze.

“Bless—”

“H-hih’KSSZCHUHH!”

“Bless you.”

His sinuses prickled as Chloe walked toward him through the throngs of people in the nightclub, her scent traveling with her. She was definitely wearing a new perfume, one he couldn’t put his finger on. Without interrupting the tune he was playing the bar’s piano, he looked up and grinned at her.

“Hello, Detective.”

Chloe’s eyebrows narrowed. “Tell me why when I searched through public records, Lucifer Morningstar didn’t seem to exist five years ago?”

He smiled, eyes twinkling, and gave a hesitant sniff. What was that scent? Jasmine, a little vanilla, something… citrus?

“I did exist five years ago,” he told her, flashing his white teeth. “Just not on the e-ehhhh… earthly plane.” Lucifer rubbed his nose quickly, trying not to disrupt the melody he was playing.

She leaned closer to him. “Oh, really? Who were you?”

Chloe was a mere few inches away from Lucifer’s face and he felt her perfume teasing and tickling at his nostrils. “And tell me, how did you survive getting shot six times?”

“Is th-thahhh… is that you’re normal reaction to someone saving your — hh’TSHHH! — your life?” He turned and sneezed into his shoulder without lifting his hands off the keys. A true performer.

“I’m a detective, so yeah, I look for answers whenever I can’t explain something— are you okay?”

She watched as his eyes watered and his mouth stretched into what looked like a yawn. He gasped and pressed his twitching nose into his shoulder.

“H-hahh… ahhH! Ah’TSSCHHHH! Hh’RRRSSHHHUH!” He wanted to sniff so badly as his nose had now began to run, but her perfume was so dominant that he didn’t want to risk inhaling and more of it. Lucifer’s throat and sinuses itched something awful.

Lucifer cleared his throat, continuing to play. “I’ve given you the answers, Detective. I think you just cahhh… c-can’t get enough of me,” he said, hitching again and forcing a few more sneezes into his shoulder. “Ch-Christ almighty— hh’ERSHHHUHH! RSHHHHUH!”

Chloe rolled her eyes. “You’ve got me. I’m completely smitten with you and your incessant sneezing.”

“So you are the Devil?” Linda remarked sarcastically. 

Lucifer’s face was ashen, and his dark eyes had shadows underneath them. Even still, Linda was amazed that (as much as she hated to admit it), he was still an attractive man, if you could call him that. 

“This body has certainly betrayed me this time,” Lucifer gasped, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Huh’TSHHUHHH!”

“Bless you,” she said, as they sat in her office. She shifted her position — crossed and uncrossed her legs. When Linda glanced back up at him, her eyes narrowed. “So, you’ve left Hell to… vacation in Los Angeles?”

Lucifer scoffed. That’s now how he would put it. Unfortunately, this brought on a fit of coughing, which he tried to quiet. 

“Would you like some water?”

“No, no, quite alright,” he choked out, desperately trying to swallow and regain his composure. “Why aren’t you bothered by my being… oh, I dunno, the Prince of Darkness?” Lucifer discreetly rubbed at his nostrils while she was looking away.

“Oh, no worries,” she said, writing a few notes in her notepad. “I’m willing to work within your metaphor.” 

“R-right,” he stuttered, before sneezing into a crooked elbow. “Heh’TSHHHUHH!”

“Last we spoke,” she continued. “You were bothered by humanity’s… shortcomings, was it?”

He shook his head. “No, no, m-more like my own feelings of — excuse me,” Lucifer rushed before sneezing again. “Hh’SHOOO! My own human feelings.”

“You know, we can always reschedule if you aren’t feeling well,” Linda told him, peering up at him through her rectangle frames.

Lucifer waved her off. “It’s fine, actually, because… well, I’m healed.” 

“Oh, really?”

He grinned. “Yep. Back to my normal, devilish self, so to sp-speak.” Lucifer rammed a finger against his twitching nostrils. “Damn this ihhh… itch — hur’ESHOOO!”

“God bless—”

“You don’t have to say that,” Lucifer interrupted, sniffling against the back of his wrist.

Dean almost dropped his cell phone in surprise. He hadn’t heard from Castiel in days and hearing his voice, even coming through crackly on his shitty burner was wonderful.

“Cas, are you okay? What the hell is going on?”

On the other end, Castiel sniffled into the receiver. “Metatron tricked me, Dean. I… I don’t have my grace.”

“Super. We’ve got another problem,” Dean told him, biting his lip. “Sam, he’s… dying. Didn’t you hear my prayers?”

“My grace, Dean. It means… I don’t have my powers anymore.”

Dean heard him sniffle again and wondered if he might be crying. “What? So what do we do?”

“Don’t worry about me,” Castiel assured him. “Just— h-heh’TSHHHH!”

Dean paused before speaking again, wondering if he heard right. “Hey, uh, Cas? Was that a—”

“H-hihh… h-hold on, Dean, I— huhH! Hh’TSCHSHHH!”

“Oh, wow. Bless you, I guess? I didn’t think angels could— oh, right.”

Castiel sighed. “Now that I’m technically human, I guess I should get used to this. How often do humans — h-heh’TSHHHUH! — how often do humans sneeze?”

“Honestly, not this often,” Dean remarked, running his hand through his hair. “Do you think you could’ve caught a cold or something?”

“A cold?”

Castiel paused, considering. “Well, I met another angel and she’s lost. She has an animal that follows her around — a dog. I think—”

“Cas, you’ve got to lay low, man. They’re other angels around here and they’re pissed and searching for you.”

“Not this one. She’s just lost and needs — h-hang on, I have to — h-hihhh… ihHH! Heh’TSHHH! She just needs direction,” Castiel stammered, breath hitching. “I— o-ohh… hh’TSSCHHH! TSHHHHSHUH!”

“Jesus, bless you,” Dean said, starting to worry. “Hey, are you sure you’re not coming down with— wait.”

He shook his head, smiling. “Cas, did you say that girl had a dog with her?”

“Y-yes,” Castiel choked out before sneezing into the receiver again.

“Cas, buddy. I think you might be allergic to dogs.”

“A-ahhh… allergic?”

“Yeah, you know,” Dean said, trailing off. “Certain things can make you really itchy or start sneezing or something.”

“S-so the dog is to — heh’TSSCHHH! — the dog is to blame?” Cas snuffled, running a finger under his twitching nostrils. “Alright. But how do I get it to stop?”

By the time Bucky comes home from the docks, his teeth are chattering. Steve’s already got dinner ready and on the table, and is pressing a steaming cup of tea into Bucky’s hands as he comes through the door. 

“Hi,” he whispers, his gentle breath tickling Bucky’s ear. 

Bucky feels a chill go down his spine and shivers. Before he can say anything, his lower lip curls and he sneezes harshly to the side. “Huh’RRSSSZSH!”

Oh. Steve’s abdomen tightens and he quickly reminds himself to breathe and for fuck’s sake, be normal. “Bless you, Buck.”

He coughs a few times and collapses into the chair pulled up to the kitchen table, scrubbing at his nose with his free hand. “I think I caught a cold.” 

Steve clucks, bringing a few napkins to the table and pushing a steaming bowl in front of him. It’s a vegetable stew and Bucky’s mouth waters just looking at it. As he’s grabbing for his spoon, Steve’s hand grabs his.

“I’m sorry you’re not feeling well.”

“I’m feeling fine,” Bucky says, sniffling. “J-just got a — hh’SCHSCHHH! — a tickle.” 

Steve forces himself to smile but finds himself… distracted. Instead of eating, like Bucky’s doing, Steve’s just watching him. Noticing his watery eyes, his rosy cheeks, his pink (but otherwise perfect) nose, his shiny, fevered skin…

“What?” Bucky’s mouth is stuffed with a rather large spoonful of stew.

“Me? No, nothing.”

“You’re just st-stahh… sorry. You’re just staring at—” He breaks off with another throat-wrenching sneeze. “H-hahh… hehH! Hh’TSZSSSHH!”

Steve crosses his legs.

“H-hihh…” Bucky looks like he’s going to sneeze again and his mouth is curled in a pre-sneeze snarl, but the feeling dissipated and he sniffles, looking disappointed. “S-sorry, thought I had to sneeze.”

“Why don’t we go to bed?” Steve says, biting his lip and trying not to think of jumping Bucky’s fucking bones.

“Right now?” Bucky says, mouth full of food again. “But it’s only—”

“Mmhmm,” Steve manages to choke out, grabbing Bucky by the arm and leading him to their bedroom.

91. Blanket Drill

Winter nights in Austria were cold, sure. But they always seemed colder when Bucky was standing guard. It was roughly 0200 hours and he felt like his fingers were frozen. Bucky sniffled miserably.

It didn’t help that he had a nasty headcold from hell. Bucky’s throat was completely raw and if he was being honest, he needed a clean handkerchief. Well, what he really needed was some time off.

But then again, soldiers never got time off. 

“H-huhh… huh’FSSSH!” 

Bucky buried his irritated nose in his handkerchief, blowing to try and get some relief from the tickle.

“Bless you,” Steve said sleepily, yawning. 

He came up behind Bucky, wrapped in an Army-issued, wool blanket. Steve draped another one over Bucky, who shakily wrapped it closer around himself.  

“Th-thanks,” he said, before ducking into it with another harsh sneeze. “Heh’ISSSHMPPHF!” 

The sneeze itself was muffled by Bucky’s damp handkerchief and he blew his nose again tiredly. 

“That’s some cold you got there, Buck,” Steve commented. 

Bucky sniffled and shivered. “Yeah, well. You know how it goes.” 

The two sat in silence, appreciated the cold quiet that was Salzburg. Snow began to fall lightly and Bucky shook a cigarette out of the pack, just to have something else to do besides sneeze and blow his nose. He nonchalantly lit a match and held it up to his cigarette, hands shaking. An ill-timed sneeze ruined it.

“Huh’RRSSSZSH!”

Steve watched the cigarette tumble from his lips and putter out in the snow.

“Fuck,” Bucky cursed, shaking out another one, but he was out of matches.

He groaned, snuffling into his handkerchief. “Steve, you got a light?”

“Sure, Buck,” Steve said and studied Bucky’s face in the tiny, yellow light of the match he’d just lit.

Bucky’s face was shiny with a thin sheen of sweat — despite the brisk temperature — and his cheeks were almost the same tint as the tip of his nose. Even so, he was still beautiful in Steve’s eyes.

The cigarette lit and Steve shook the match out, tossing it in the snow. Bucky took a long drag and coughed, the smoke burning his already irritated lungs.

“You should get some rest,” Steve suggested, rubbing his hands together to generate some heat. 

Bucky shook his head. “You know I have two more hours left. Jeez, have some faith. I’m on mid-watch tonight.” 

“I know, but you—”

Steve was interrupted by a dramatic gasp and series of ticklish sneezes.
“H-hihh… hih’SCHSCHHH! Hh’TSZSSSHH!” 

He shuddered, followed by a liquid sniff. 

“You’re just going to get worse,” Steve told him, inching closer toward him. “Let me take over for you. I’m wide awake, anyhow.” 

Bucky let out a little puff of smoke and shook his head, sniffing thickly. “I’b fide, Steve. Led be do b-by job — huh’RRCHZSHH!” 

The sneeze scraped against his throat and he swallowed, wincing at the pain. 
Steve shook his head. “Well, if you won’t go back in the tent, you’re going to wear my blanket, too.” 

Before Bucky could protest, Steve had shrugged out from underneath the wool blanket and draped it over Bucky’s shoulders. “There.”

A large thunderclap resounds around Steve and Robin as they ride their bicycles through the pouring rain. At the loud sound, Steve ducks instinctively, making Robin roll her eyes. 

“Steve, I hate to break this to you, but thunder can’t actually touch you,” Robin said, absent-mindedly rubbing her dripping nose on the underside of her wrist. 

“It’s not the thunder I’m scared of,” Steve said as they turned the corner. “It’s what comes after. This is why I don’t ride my bike to work. Why not? Because I’m an adult with a car and you are too.” 

“H-hah’KTSSSH! TSSSH!” 

Steve turned behind him to look in the direction of the sounds. He groaned when he watched Robin’s eyes flutter shut again. 

“H-hehh… hahhH!”

Her mouth stretched into a yawn of a sneeze, then dissipated. Robin sniffled and tried to concentrate on not crashing. Since Steve was still looking at her, she struggled. “Lost it.” 

“You really shouldn’t be riding in the rain with a cold, Robin. That’s like health 101.” 

“Did you ever even take health?” she asked thickly as they turned another corner. 

Just a few more blocks until a warm shower. 

“Yes I did,” Steve argued, shaking the water from his hair as they rode. “I’m very well-versed in health, especially sexual health.” 

“You are disgusting,” Robin said, laughing. “Such a guy. Is sex all you think about when you’re around w-women? Even women you c-cahh… can’t — hh’TSSSSH! — cad’t have?”

Robin unintentionally yanked her handlebars due to the sheer force of the sneeze and had to dramatically overcorrect. She knew she was going to fall before it happened. 

“Shit,” Steve mumbled under his breath as he turned around. 

Robin was on the wet pavement, her dripping hair in her face. It looked like her knees were skinned but other than that, she seemed okay.

“You alright?” he asked, just to confirm. 

She looked up and opened her mouth to reply, but snapped forward with a series of ticklish sneezes instead. “TSSSHH! Ahh… hahhH! Hah’TSSSHP!”

A shiver tore through her, chilling her to her core, and Steve felt a twinge of guilt for not being more adamant about not riding in the rain. 

“Let’s just get you home, okay? We’re only a few blocks away.” 

“I fell off by bike, stupid,” Robin said thickly. “I sdill kdow where I ab, you kdow.”

Jon Snow was uncertain of where exactly he was. What he was certain of was that he was fevered. 

He could feel everything in a sort of intimate way. The fur coat covering him tickled gently at his skin and his nose, as he buried the cold, reddened tip into it.

“Hah’KSSSSHUH!” 

It was a shuddering sneeze that shook him to the core, and he shivered miserably afterward. Damn headcold. Unforgiving weather. 

Jon snuffled into the fur and feverishly wished (for a strange, brief moment) that he was covered with fur. 

A feminine hand floated and found its way to his forehead, his heated brow, and provided some cool relief for him there. He tried to turn away as a wrenching sneeze found itself out of his nose. 

“H-hih’FFSSSSHH! Ahhh… hahhH!” 

His nostrils quivered, begging for reprieve, but no further relief came. Jon sniffled thickly as the figure whispered something. 

“To your health,” she said. 

A typical blessing of well wishes. 

He wanted to thank her but realized that at this point, he was in the throes of a sneezing fit. Jon buried his itching nose in the fur and shuddered with the force of the sneezes. 

“AhhH! Heh’MMFFSSH! TSSSHHUH! H-hehhh… hihH! Hih’HMPFSH!”

He pinched his nose through the fur, wishing the gods-forsaken itch would leave him be. 

“Soon enough, love,” the female voice told him.

Steve Harrington was absolutely miserable.

The entire Harrington family was at a dinner as a part of the conference his father had to attend for work. Mr. Harrington worked as the CEO of an up-and-coming engineering firm and for Steve, attending this black-tie dinner was strictly mandatory. Under no circumstances was Steve to miss it.

Which is precisely why — as Steve sat at one of the round tables alone — he was also snuffling into a handkerchief.

“H-huhhh… hh’TSSSHUH!”

The sound of his sneeze was muffled thanks to the handkerchief, but still shattered the quiet silence that had settled over the room. Steve still got a few dirty looks from those around him and sniffled miserably as he stuffed the handkerchief back into his coat pocket.

Without much warning, everyone in the venue began clapping vigorously and Steve’s father briskly walked out onto the stage, grinning. As soon as he began to speak, Mrs. Harrington at his side of course, Steve felt his nose begin to itch. 

Not now, for God’s sake, he thought, discreetly rubbing the underside of his nose with a knuckle.

“I’ve been with this company for the last two years, if you all can believe it,” his father was saying. “The institute as a whole has—”

With shaking hands, Steve tugged the handkerchief back out of his coat pocket and hurriedly pressed it to his face before the impending sneezing fit.

“H-heh’KSSSSHHF! H-huhhh… h-hih’MMMPF!”

Despite being a few hundred feet from the stage, Steve could feel his father staring at him and with a sinking realization, felt he was going to sneeze again. Damn this cold.

He pinched his nostrils shut cruelly through the handkerchief and pitched forward with two more unsatisfying sneezes. “Hh’KNNT! H-hih’GNT!”

Though his face was flushing, Steve felt his nostrils relax and sniffled, tucking the handkerchief away once again. Maybe next time his parents wouldn’t make him attend an event when he was ill.

Steve’s curled up on the couch listening to the radio when Bucky comes in, slightly late, from work.

“Long day?” Steve asks, sitting up and making room for Bucky on the couch.

Bucky runs his fingers through his hair and sits down, exhausted. He nods and kicks off his boots.

“Yeah, nothin’ new,” he says, smiling at Steve. “Same shit, different day.”

Steve can’t help himself and lays his head on Bucky’s chest, listening to him breathe. With a secret smile, Steve leans in a little more as Bucky starts hitching.

“H-hihhh… ih’TSSSSH! TSSSSHUH!”

“Bless you,” Steve says, biting his lip.

The itchy sneezes come fast and Bucky swipes at his nose, surprised. “Sorry, no idea where those— h-heh’TSSSCHSSSHH! Hihhh… hahhH! Hh’TSSSCCCHH!”

Steve feels his abdomen tighten with excitement. He doesn’t want to admit it, but he loves seeing Bucky sneeze and isn’t quite sure why. There’s a certain cologne that Bucky’s allergic to and yes, Steve put it on right before Bucky was due home from work. Does Steve feel guilty about it? Well…

Bucky’s sinuses prickle again, making his eyes water something fierce. “TSSSSHH! H-hehhh… ehhH! Hh’TSSSSHUH!”

“Christ,” Bucky says, scrubbing his nose with the heel of his palm. “I have no idea wh-whahhhh… what’s gotten into me.”

Steve kisses Bucky’s jaw and the scent of the cologne — citrus, clove and something mustier — drifts up toward Bucky’s quivering nostrils.

“G-God,” Bucky gasps, turning away from Steve again. “Are you w-wearing thahhh… th-that — TSSSSCHH! — thad cologne?”

Steve feigns surprise. “Oh! Oh, Bucky, I’m sorry. It slipped my mind.”

Bucky takes a shaky inhale and sneezes a few more times, trying to get rid of the consistent itch buried somewhere deep. “TSSSHH! Hahhh… ahhH! Hah’TSSSCHSSSHH!”

He sniffles thickly, rubbing his nose with the back of his hand. “D-do you have a — TSSSSHH! — a handkerchief?”

Steve practically leaps at the thought. “Of course, sorry. Here.”

He presses the piece of cloth into Bucky’s trembling hands and prays that Bucky can’t tell how badly Steve wants to kiss him.
