28. "The Weather Outside Is Frightful"

It was mid-winter and frost covered the apartment's windowsill. Outside, it was snowing like mad and the ground was coated in ice and snow. Foggy and Karen were inside, anxiously waiting for the return of Matt who had apparently gotten caught in the snowstorm and wasn't answering his mobile.

"Hahhh... hah'SHOO!" Foggy's bangs flipped into his eyes as he sneezed and Karen smiled at him sympathetically.

"Bless you, Foggy."

He groaned. "Thags."

They were seated on the couch watching Fried Green Tomatoes, upon Karen's request. Foggy was wrapped up in a blanket, sniffling, and Karen was nestled in his shoulder.

"Baybe you shouldn't be sittig so close to b-be." Foggy said, shivering. "I'b sdill contagious."

"And maybe you should eat that homemade soup Sra. Cardenas made for you."

"Touche." he replied, snuffling into his wrist. "Hey, do you th-think I should be worried aboud Madd? Because I--" He suddenly turned his head away from her, snapping forward with a powerful sneeze. "Hap'SHUHH!" Foggy took another shuddering breath and Karen felt his shoulders shake from the force. "At'SHHOO!"

"Bless you, baby." She rubbed him on the shoulder comfortingly and kissed him on the cheek.

"Because I'b thinkig baybe I should go out lookig for hib." He looked at her, eyes red-rimmed and watering.

Karen laughed. "You can't be serious. You're sick, Foggy. You're staying right here."

"Oh, I'b h-hohhhh... o-okay." he told her, breath hitching. "Just c-can't sdop... sd-sdeehhh... sdeezig." He gave his nose and irritated rub. "Plus, I kdow he'd do the sabe for be."

As if he'd heard their entire conversation, Matt swung open the door. Flurries accompanied him as he entered, quickly shutting the door behind him. "How is he?"

Karen opened her mouth, about to reply, but Foggy beat her to it. "He is jusd fide." With a slight twitch of his nostirls, Foggy's nose betrayed him. "Hh'SHHPFFT!"

Matt broke out into a wide grin and chuckled. "Was that a failed attempt at holding in a sneeze, Foggy?"

"Oh, sh-shud up."

Gregory House was flipping through a medical textbook when Wilson rapped on the door with his knuckles. Without waiting for House's nod of approval, he walked inside, eyebrow already raised. "House? It's almost twelve in the morning..."

When he received no response, save for a sniffle, Wilson continued. "I mean, I'm here to support a family who's going through the worst thing a family can go through, but I know you don't do things like that. Plus aren't you--"

House's harsh sneeze interuppted him. "Huh'PSHOO! Har'ESHHOO!"

"--sick?" Wilson finished, somewhat lamely. He pulled up a chair and leaned over his friend's desk, trying to read the page upside down.

"'m busy." the doctor muttered, running a finger under his dripping nose.

"Busy doing--? You know what, that's disgusting; you're a doctor for God's sake." Wilson told him, handing the other man a few tissues.

House dabbed at his sore nose. "I'b doing sobe research."

Wilson let out a laugh. "You? Research? Don't you just let your flying monkeys do all that?"

When House buried his twitching nose into the handful of tissues, Wilson felt sorry for poking fun at him. "Hiihhh... hih'ISSHOO! Hap'SHAHH!"

"Seriously, dude, you should go home. Get some rest. With a case like this, you'll need it."

"D-doe..." House replied, nose trembling. "I have to-- nn'SCHSH!"

"Bless you." Wilson said sympathetically. "You know, you have an obsession."

"I kdow."

"You need to eat." Merlin told his King, nodding towards the bowl of broth waiting for him. Arthur took one look at it and shook his head. "No thank you, I'm not very hungry."

"What about a loaf of bread?" the young warlock asked. "I've also got potatoes, your favourite."

A shiver raced over the king's skin, leaving a trail of goosebumps in his wake. "N-no, honestly." He cringed when Merlin pressed a cool cloth to his forehead.

"I thought you'd enjoy the damp rag... you're still running a fever."

"My--" Arthur stopped talking and suddenly pushed Merlin away, turning his head in the opposite direction. "Heh! Heh'SHUHH! Hep'SHUHSHH!" He sniffled lightly, bringing a knuckle to his nose.

"Blessings. Handkerchief?"

Arthur shook his head. "I'm fine."

Merlin smiled. "Of course you are." He helped Arthur sit up against the backboard of his bed and reached for the spoon. "Three sips of broth, at least."

This statement was met by a small groan from Arthur. Yet as Merlin brought the tablespoon to his lips, he yielded and accepted it, swallowing graciously. "Thank you, Mother."

Although Merlin did not correct him or say anything further, Arthur blinked and felt his face flush more than it already was. "I'm sorry. I thought... I thought..." His nose wrinkled and Merlin felt his stomach flip. "Hh'SHHNK! Hap'SHHOO!"

"Bless you." Merlin responded, this time pressing the handkerchief into Arthur's shaking hand. He brought it up to his trembling nose and gave one last sneeze. "Hup'PSHHH!"

"Bless." Merlin set down the bowl of soup. "Perhaps you should rest a bit."

"I'm okay, really." Arthur tried to assure him, weakly giving his nose a rub. "Just my nose itches."

"I know." Merlin dabbed at Arthur's brow, which was dotted with sweat. "Your fever should be breaking soon."

"Merlin..." Arthur trailed off, his bleary eyes staring into Merlin's blue ones. "Why are you doing this?"

Merlin set the damp cloth aside. "Because you're my friend."

"It must be so exhausting doing this day in, day out." Arthur coughed a bit but Merlin was grinning.

"Your fever must be pretty high for you to be saying such things." He comfortingly squeezing the king's shoulder.

Arthur brought a fist up and yawned into it, his body begging for rest.

Merlin gave him a small smile. "Get some sleep." He brushed back the king's bangs but let his hand linger there, on his forehead. The skin-to-skin contact between them made Merlin feel funny. Almost like he was--

"Hmm... your hand is cold." Arthur murmured, trembling.

"Oh, apologi--" Merlin started to remove his hand, but Arthur reached up and grabbed the servant's wrist. "No, please, it... it feels good."

31. "Illness and Injury"

The bullet didn't just graze him; Dean felt it bite him and travel inside him, inside his shoulder. He let out a strangled hiss and ducked behind a tree, leaning up against it for support. "Shit." he cursed through gritted teeth.

"Come out, come out, wherever you are..." The monster's voice seemed to travel on the wind, echoing all around him.

Dean grunted, clamping a hand to his shoulder. "I didn't know monsters need guns." He was interrupted by a loud gunshot. Dean peered around the tree trunk, only to find his brother leaning over the corpse of a shifter. "You're good." Dean wheezing, coming out of his hiding place.

"Thanks, I--" Sam's eyes drifted from Dean's forced smile to his bleeding shoulder. "Did you get shot?"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah... don't rub it in." He sniffled, not wanting to move his hand from his shoulder. Sam quickly grabbed Dean's hand and moved it away, so as to inspect the wound closer.

"Dean... the bullet's still in your arm and it might even be in fragments. We need to get you to--"

Dean felt the tickle in his nose long before he actually sneezed. The harder he tried to fight it, the more he had to sneeze. Finally, as Sam was watching his twitching nose in curiosity, Dean turned his head. "Huh'SHHH'shit!" The abrupt movement wreaked havoc on his busted shoulder.

"Oh, great. Tell me you're not getting sick." Sam groaned, leading him to the car.

"Most people just say 'bless you'." Dean responded as a shiver ripped through him.

Hours later, Sam had a chipped bowl full of bullet fragments and Dean's shoulder was wrapped in bandages. And it was clear he was sick.

"I'm gonna get some water." Dean announced, swinging his legs off the couch.

"Like hell you are." Sam replied. "I'll get it."

"I'm sick, not use... useless." he said breathlessly, eyes fluttering shut. "Huh... huh'SHHH! Heh'SHOO! Ahhh... ahhH!" He pinched his nose shut and bobbed forward. "Hahh..." He exhaled, arm throbbing in pain.

Sam returned with a glass of water and another blanket. "Best to conserve heat when you've been shot... and you happen to be sick at the same time."

Dean coughed and shuddered. "I'b so sigg of sd-sdeezing."

"I think you're just sick, period."

Dean gave him a look.

"Just don't them in, it's not gonna help you." Sam told him, changing the channel.

"Bud id hurds whed I sd-sdehhh... sdeeze." the eldest Winchester explained, breath hitching. "Ahh... hahhh... hahH!--" Dean brought his hand up to his nose, prepared to hold it back, but Sam grabbed his wrist at the last minute, preventing him from doing so. "Hh'DZSHSHCH!"

"That was a big one." Sam chuckled, passing his brother the tissues.

"Sab, sh-shud the fugg up."

"I had nothing better to do." she replied with a shrug and a smirk.

"Well I'm glad you're here."

She glanced up at him, surprised, but he was already reaching for a cigarette. "You want one?" Then, to his surprise, she nodded. Truly a gentleman, Bender placed a cigarette on her lips and lit it for her, using hers to light his. "Huh. You smell, uh, really nice." He was still trying to work on this whole "polite" thing. She smiled.

"Really? Thanks it's new actually, from a collection called Genuinely..." she trailed off. Directly in front of her, Bender had shakily taken the cigarette from his mouth and was holding it as his nostrils flare. "Are you going to--?"

The young man snapped forward into his hand. "Huh'PPSHH! Ah'SHHHT!" He looked dazed and sniffled.

"Wow, bless you."

He gave her a weary look. "Oh d-don't worry, I'm not d-done. Hahhh... hah'SHHHP!" His nose trembled and he scrubbed it with his wrist, annoyed. "I don't know wh-whahhh... what's gotten into m-me."

"Are you feeling okay?" She reached over to feel him for fever but he expertly ducked out of her way.

"Godda sdeeze. ASHHHT!" Finally, teary eyed and exhausted, he pinched his nose and continued bobbing forward with sneezes. "Hh'NNGTT! Ahhh... ahH! Ah'SHHP! Hur'CHT! Hehhh... ihhH!"

Claire watched him suffer, his tickly nose twitching madly but his fingers preventing the nose of any release. "Oh, John..." she murmured sympathetically.

He slid back in his chair and rubbed his nose into the scarf around his neck. "Sorry. I think I baybe allergic to your p-perfube."

"No, no. I'll go to the lavatory and wash it off."

Bender grabbed her wrist as she was getting up. "Really, id's fide, I... I like the way id sbells... like you."

"Well, okay..." she said, sitting back down. "I'll stay."

"Rogers, we need to move." Natasha hissed under her breath, discreetly nodding to some men milling around outside the Apple store. "They're in civilian clothes."

"Yeah, okay, well thanks anyway." Steve said to the employee trying to show off the features of a Mac.

The pair breezed out the door, and Steve put his hood up. "Alright," he spoke through his teeth, "there are two in front, two behind and three on either side. What do you suppose--"

"Just keep your head down. Now, laugh at something I just said."

Steve let out a chuckle and quickened his step, but not before another salesperson got in his face. "Try the new Dolce and Gabbana, sir?"

Before he could let out a "no thank you", the young man covered him in a fine mist of the cologne. Still walking and trying to get out of the cloud of perfume, Steve brought his hand up to his nose. "Huh'PCHOO! H-huh'SHOO!"

Natasha shot him a side squint. "Steve, now really isn't the time for--"

"Ah'SHUHH!" He nearly doubled over with the force of it. The man straightened back up and rubbed his nose fiercely. "I know, I'm really s-suhhh... s-sorry." he sniffled.

All of a sudden, Natasha turned towards him, eyes bright with an idea. "Kiss me."

"Wh-what? Now?" Steve asked, eyes watering. "I don't think that's such a good idea, I still really have to--" He sniffled again, trying to alleviate the itch in his sinuses.

"Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable." she informed him before grabbing his collar and pulling him into a hasty kiss. Sure enough, Brock Rumlow subconsciously glanced away, though Steve could still hear him talking to his men.

"We're gonna catch this guy if it's the last thing you guys do. You hear me? Find them." Rumlow hissed into his walkie-talkie. "This isn't gonna be another failure, especially on my part."

Eeeehehe I love it! Steve getting assaulted with cologne at the most inopportune moment. If I were Natasha, I'd ask for a kiss right about then, too.
